I am capable, O mighty-winged one; I am not miserly.
Indeed, O dear one, I have been rendered powerless by this great soul.
Even knowing this, O lord of Daityas, and though restrained by my teacher,
That third step of Vishnu, which was promised, must be given.
Why do you not give me, your master, the third step? Then the son of Virocana was bound with Varuna’s nooses.
Then Garuda, the best of the victorious, became exceedingly harsh.
He fitted a single arrow and stood before Vamana.
Then Prahlada, the lord of the Asuras, full of great energy, spoke.
Hearing Prahlāda’s words, Vāmana spoke; and when thus addressed by the Lord, Vindhyāvali replied.
Why has my husband been bound by the great-souled Garuḍa? Then the radiant one, disguised as a young brāhmin, spoke.
By this very one, land measuring three steps was given to me.
By him, the third step is yet to be given to me.
Hearing the Lord’s words, she spoke these supreme words.
Today, O you of mighty stride, you have traversed the three worlds.
Yet, O Lord of lords, master of the universe, nothing has truly been given.
Today, three steps must be given by me—how now can this be? Then that virtuous lady, steadfast before the great-striding one, spoke.
How, by you, O sole lord of the worlds, has this threefold universe been traversed with your great stride?
Therefore, leaving that aside, O Viṣṇu, do this now: let my husband give you the gift today—there is no need for further deliberation.
Place your foot, O best of gods, O Lord, upon my husband’s head.
And, O Lord of the universe, let the third step be made upon my husband’s head.
Hearing her words, Janārdana was well pleased.
Go to Sutala, O king of the Daityas; you should not delay.
I am pleased with you, dear one; what shall I do for you?
Choose a boon, good fortune to you; I will grant you all desires.
Freed and embraced by the Lord of gods, the wielder of the discus—
By you, all this world, both moving and unmoving, has been accomplished.
May devotion to your lotus feet arise, O God Janardana.
Thus entreated by him, the blessed Lord, creator of beings, spoke.
Bali, go to Sutala, surrounded by your kinsmen and relatives.
O Lord of gods, tell me what I must do in Sutala.
