It was pervaded in all directions by the great form of Brahma.
Hearing this, the wise Bali spoke to Shanda and Amarka.
Thinking 'so be it,' those two Brahmins quickly rose at that time.
They saw the great-souled Shri Hari in the form of a dwarf.
A single celibate student has arrived, and there is no other; we do not know the reason—O wise one, discern it.
When these words were thus spoken by the two, that great-minded one—
The mighty son of Virocana, radiant with great energy, beheld him.
He immediately brought the young ascetic and seated him on his own seat.
With his head bowed, he spoke with gentle words.
Hearing the words of Virocana’s son,
You are indeed the king, lord of the three worlds; no other is fit to be so.
Whoever is known to be equal or superior among men,
Among the Daityas, the foremost are those like Hiraṇyakaśipu.
He whose body was consumed while he practiced great austerity,
Knowing this, long ago, the lord of the gods departed.
In his presence, all the Asuras were slain by the enemy of the Daityas.
Once, O king, when Nārada wished to accomplish a certain task, all of it was subdued by the Daitya lord through austerity.
Her son, radiant with great energy, by whom the assembly was entered, was Virocana by name, and Indra, the great-souled one, was led there by him.
O king, at that time, he was gratified by a gift, with his own head.
By the great lamp of his fame, the gods were burned like moths.
I have heard all your deeds, O virtuous one.
For the sake of a hermitage, grant me land, O best of earth-holders.
O ascetic, having become learned, whatever words were spoken before,
Tell me quickly, O illustrious one, how much land you desire.
Then Vāmana spoke these words, smiling with a sweet voice.
Those Brāhmaṇas who are satisfied are indeed true; not these others who merely wear the appearance.
O greatly wise one, they are free from envy, have conquered anger, and are generous.
You are noble-minded and, because of your abundance, you are a giver in all three worlds.
O slayer of gods, I have no need for abundance.
For us, three steps will suffice—there is no doubt about this; that is the measure to be given, if you are indeed a giver, O Bali.
