निशम्य वाक्यं शक्रस्य यमो वचनमब्रवीत् १८.
Hearing Shakra's words, Yama spoke.
भोगार्थं चैव यद्दत्तं शक्रराज्यं त्वयाऽधुन् १८.
Whatever was given for enjoyment, and also the kingdom of Shakra, was given by you just now.
अकार्यं वै त्वया मूढ परद्रव्यापहारणम् १८.
You have acted wrongly, O fool, by taking the property of another.
यमस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा कितवो वाक्यमब्रवीत् १८.
Hearing Yama's words, the gambler spoke.
यावत्स्वता मम विभो जाता शक्रासने तथा १८.
As long as my independence, O Lord, has arisen while seated upon Indra’s throne.
दानं प्रशस्तं भूम्यां च दृश्यते कर्म्मणः फलम् तस्माद्दंड्योऽसि रे मूढ अशास्त्रीयं कृतं त्वया॥ १८.
A praiseworthy gift upon the earth is seen to bear the fruit of action; therefore, you are to be punished, O fool, for you have acted contrary to scripture.
गुरुरात्मवतां शास्ता राजा शास्ताः दुरात्मनाम् १८.
The teacher is the ruler of those who are self-controlled; the king is the ruler of the wicked.
एवं निर्भर्त्सयित्वा तं कितवं धर्मराट्स्वयम् तदा प्रहस्य चोवाच चित्रगुप्तो यमं प्रति॥ १८.
Thus, having rebuked that gambler, the king of Dharma himself, then laughing, spoke to Citragupta in the presence of Yama.
कथं निरयगामित्वं कितवस्य भविष्यति १८.
How will the descent to hell occur for the gambler?
तथाश्वो ह्यब्धिसंभूतो गालवाय महात्मने १८.
Thus, a horse born from the ocean was given to the great-souled Galava.
एवमादीनि रत्नानि दत्तानि कितेवन हि १८.
In this way, various jewels were given by the gambler indeed.
शिवमुद्दिश्य यदत्तं स्वर्गे मर्त्ये च यैर्नरैः तस्मान्नरकगामित्वं कितवस्य न विद्यते॥ १८.
Whatever has been given with Shiva as the aim, by men in heaven or on earth, therefore, the descent to hell does not exist for the gambler.
यानियानि च पापानि कितवस्य महात्मनः १८.
Whatever sins belong to the great-souled gambler,
शंभोः प्रसादात्सर्वाणि सुकृतानि च तत्क्षणात् १८.
By the grace of Shambhu, all of them, along with his merits, are removed at that very moment.
प्रहस्यावाङ्मुखो भूत्वा इद माह शतक्रतुम् १८.
Laughing and turning his face downward, he spoke these words to Shatakratu.
अश्वमेधशतेनैव एकं जन्मार्जितं कृतम् १८.
With a hundred horse sacrifices alone, a single birth-earned deed is accomplished.
प्रार्थयित्वा ह्यगस्त्यादीन्मुनीन्सर्वान्विशेषतः गजादिकानि रत्नानि येन त्वं च सुखी त्वरन्॥ १८.
Having earnestly requested Agastya and all the sages, especially, by whom you, eager, became happy with jewels such as elephants.
तथेति मत्वा वचनं पुरंदरो गतः पुरीं स्वामविवेकदृष्टिः १८.
Thinking 'so be it' regarding the statement, Purandara went to his own city, with discernment.
अनेनैव प्रकारेण लब्धराज्यः पुरंदरः १८.
In this very manner, Purandara obtained his kingdom.
कितवस्य पुनर्जन्म दत्तं वैवस्वतेन हि १८.
The gambler’s rebirth was granted by Vaivasvata.
सुरुचिर्जननी तस्य कितवस्याभवत्तदा तस्थौ जठरमास्थाय तस्याः सोऽपि महात्मनः॥ १८.
Suruchi became his mother, that gambler’s, at that time; he remained within her womb, that great-souled one.
तदाप्रभृति तस्यैव प्रह्लादस्यात्मजात्स वै १८.
From that time onward, from Prahlada’s son, indeed, it was his.
तेनैव जठरस्थेन कृता मतिरनुत्तमा १८.
By that very one who was within the womb, an unsurpassed resolve was made.
एकदा वै तदा शक्रो ययौ वैरोचनं प्रति १८.
Once, at that time, Śakra went to see Virocana.
विरोचनगृहं प्राप्त इंद्रो वाक्यमुवाच ह मनस्वी त्वं च दैत्येंद्र दाता च भुवनत्रये॥ १८.
Having reached Virocana’s house, Indra spoke these words: 'You are wise, O lord of the Daityas, and a generous giver in all three worlds.'
तव विप्रा महाभाग चरितं परमाद्भुतम् याचकोऽहं च दैत्येंद्र दातुरर्महसि सुव्रत॥ १८.
Your conduct, O most fortunate one, is truly wondrous, O lord of the Daityas; I am a supplicant, and you are renowned for your generosity, O steadfast one.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दैत्येंद्रो वाक्यमब्रवीत् १८.
Hearing those words, the lord of the Daityas spoke.
इंद्रो हि विप्ररूपेण विरोचनमुवाच ह १८.
Indra, assuming the form of a Brāhmaṇa, addressed Virocana.
आत्मप्रीत्या च दातव्यं मम नास्त्यत्र संशयः १८.
It must be given out of selfless delight; for me, there is no doubt about this.
ददाम्यात्मशिरो विप्र यदि कामयसेऽधुना अहं समर्पयिष्यामि तव नास्त्यत्र सशयः॥ १८.
O Brāhmaṇa, I will give my own head if you desire it now; I will offer it to you, there is no doubt about this.
