ऐरावतमगस्त्याय प्रददौ शिववल्लभः १८.
The beloved of Śiva gave Airāvata to Agastya.
उच्चैःश्रवससंज्ञं च कामधेनुं महायशाः १८.
The illustrious one also gave the wish-fulfilling cow named Uccaiḥśravas.
गालवाय महातेजास्तदा कल्पतरुं च सः १८.७९ एवमादीन्यनेकानि रत्नानि विविधानि च १८.
At that time, the mighty one gave the wish-fulfilling tree to Gālava; thus, many such diverse jewels and treasures.
घटितकात्रितयं यावत्तावत्कालं ददौ प्रभुः १८.
For the duration of three ghaṭikās, the lord gave them.
पुरंदरोऽमरावत्यामुपविश्य निजासने १८.
Purandara, seated upon his own throne in Amarāvatī—
शचीमुवाच दुर्मेधाः कितवेनासि भामिनि १८.
He spoke to Śacī: ‘O beautiful one, you are foolish and deceitful.’
तदा प्रहस्य चोवाच पुरंदरमकल्मषा १८.
Then, smiling, the sinless one spoke to Purandara.
असौ महात्मा कितवस्वरूपी शिवप्रसादात्परमार्थविज्ञः १८.
That great-souled one, though appearing as a gambler, through Shiva's grace has attained true knowledge.
राज्यादिकं मोहमयं च पाशं त्यक्ता परेभ्यो विजयी स जातः॥ १८.
He has abandoned the bonds of delusion such as kingship and the rest, and has become victorious over others.
वचो निशम्य देवेश इंद्राण्याः स पुरंदरः १८.
Hearing these words from the lord of the gods, Indra's wife, Purandara—
बृहस्पतिमुवाचेदं वाक्यं वाक्यविदां वरः १८.
—spoke these words to Brihaspati, the best among those skilled in speech.
पारिजातादयः सर्वे पदार्थाः केन वा हृताः १८.
By whom have all the objects, such as the Parijata tree, been taken away?
ऋषिभ्यो दत्त मद्यैव यावत्सत्ता हि तस्य वै १८.
They were just now given to the sages, for as long as they endure.
अप्रमात्ताश्च ये नित्यं शिवध्यानपरायणाः केवलं ज्ञानमाश्रित्य ते यांति परमं पदम्॥ १८.
Those who are always vigilant and devoted to meditating on Shiva, relying solely on knowledge, attain the supreme state.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य चेंद्रो बृहस्पतेर्वाक्यमिदं वभाषे १८.
Hearing these words, Indra spoke this speech to Brihaspati.
तथेति मत्वा गुरुणा सहैव राजा सुराणां सहसा जगाम १८.
Thinking 'so be it,' the king of the gods quickly went together with his teacher.
यमेन पूज्यमानो हि शक्रो वाक्यमुवाच ह १८.
Honored by Yama, Shakra spoke these words.
अनेनैतत्कृतं कर्म्म जुगुप्सितं महत्तरम् एभ्य एभ्यः प्रदत्तानि धर्म्म जानीहि तत्त्वतः॥ १८.
This act, which is most reprehensible, was done by him; know in truth that these things were given to them by him, according to dharma.
त्वं धर्मनामासि कथं कितवाय प्रदत्तवान् १८.
You are called Dharma—how could you have given them to a gambler?
आनयस्व महाभाग गजादीनि च सत्वरम् १८.
Bring here, O greatly fortunate one, the elephants and the rest at once.
निशम्य वाक्यं शक्रस्य यमो वचनमब्रवीत् १८.
Hearing Shakra's words, Yama spoke.
भोगार्थं चैव यद्दत्तं शक्रराज्यं त्वयाऽधुन् १८.
Whatever was given for enjoyment, and also the kingdom of Shakra, was given by you just now.
अकार्यं वै त्वया मूढ परद्रव्यापहारणम् १८.
You have acted wrongly, O fool, by taking the property of another.
यमस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा कितवो वाक्यमब्रवीत् १८.
Hearing Yama's words, the gambler spoke.
यावत्स्वता मम विभो जाता शक्रासने तथा १८.
As long as my independence, O Lord, has arisen while seated upon Indra’s throne.
दानं प्रशस्तं भूम्यां च दृश्यते कर्म्मणः फलम् तस्माद्दंड्योऽसि रे मूढ अशास्त्रीयं कृतं त्वया॥ १८.
A praiseworthy gift upon the earth is seen to bear the fruit of action; therefore, you are to be punished, O fool, for you have acted contrary to scripture.
गुरुरात्मवतां शास्ता राजा शास्ताः दुरात्मनाम् १८.
The teacher is the ruler of those who are self-controlled; the king is the ruler of the wicked.
एवं निर्भर्त्सयित्वा तं कितवं धर्मराट्स्वयम् तदा प्रहस्य चोवाच चित्रगुप्तो यमं प्रति॥ १८.
Thus, having rebuked that gambler, the king of Dharma himself, then laughing, spoke to Citragupta in the presence of Yama.
कथं निरयगामित्वं कितवस्य भविष्यति १८.
How will the descent to hell occur for the gambler?
तथाश्वो ह्यब्धिसंभूतो गालवाय महात्मने १८.
Thus, a horse born from the ocean was given to the great-souled Galava.
