तपसा परमेणैव प्रसन्नोहं तवानघे १८.
By your supreme austerity, O sinless one, I am pleased.
श्रुत्वा भगवतो वाक्यमदितिस्तमुवाचह तान्रक्ष शरणापन्नासुरान्सर्वाञ्जनार्दन॥ १८.
Hearing the words of the Blessed Lord, Aditi spoke to him: 'O Janārdana, protect all these gods who have taken refuge.'
निशम्य वाक्यं किल तच्च तस्या विष्णुर्विकुंठाधिपतिः स एकः १८.
Having heard those words, indeed, Vishnu, the sole lord of Vaikuntha, listened.
किं कार्यमद्यैव मया हि कार्यं येनैव देवा जयमाप्नुवंति १८.
What must be done by me today, what action by which the gods may attain victory?
गदमुवाच भगवान्गच्छस्वाद्य वधं प्रति १८.
The blessed one spoke to Gada: 'Go now, for the purpose of slaying.'
गदोवाच हृषीकेशं प्रहसन्तीव भामिनी १८.
Gada spoke to Hrishikesha, the radiant one, as if smiling.
चक्रं प्रति तदा विष्मुरुवाच परिसांत्वयन् १८.
Then, regarding the discus, Vishnu spoke, consoling.
तदोवाच त्वरेणैव चक्रपाणिं सुदर्शनम् १८.
Then he spoke swiftly to the wielder of the discus, Sudarshana.
ब्रह्मण्योऽसि यथा विष्णो तथासौ दैत्यपुंगवः चिंतयामास बहुधा विमृश्य सुचिरं बहु॥ १८.
You are devoted to Brahman, O Vishnu, and likewise that foremost demon pondered in many ways, reflecting for a long time.
तदा ते ह्यसुराः सर्वे किमकुर्वस्तदुच्यताम्॥ १८.
Then, what did all those asuras do? Let it be told.
तदा ते ह्यसुराः सर्वे बलिप्रभृतयो दिवि १८.
Then all those asuras, led by Bali, were in heaven.
न विदुर्ह्यसुराः सर्वे गतान्देवांस्त्रिविष्टपात् १८.
All the asuras did not know that the gods had departed from heaven.
प्राकारमारुह्य तदा हि संभ्रमाद्दैत्याः सुरेशं प्रति हंतुकामाः १८.
Then, out of confusion, the demons climbed the ramparts, desiring to slay the lord of the gods.
इंद्रासने च शुक्रेण ह्यभिषिक्तो बलिस्तदा १८.
At that time, Bali was anointed by Shukra upon the throne of Indra.
तथैवाधिष्ठितो राज्ये बलिर्वैरोचनो महान् १८.
In the same way, Bali, son of Virocana, the great one, was established in the kingdom.
नागैश्चासुरसंघैश्च सेव्यमानो महेंद्रवत् १८.
Attended by serpents and groups of asuras, he was served like Mahendra.
दानैर्द्दाता च सर्वेषां येऽन्ये दानित्वमागताः १८.
He became the giver of gifts to all, and others who had come for charity.
यान्यान्कामयते कामां स्तान्सर्वान्वितरत्यसौ १८.
Whatever desires he wishes, he grants all of them.
देवेंद्रो हि महाभाग न ददाति कदाचन १८.
Indeed, O illustrious one, the lord of the gods never gives.
यत्नतो येन यत्किंचित्क्रियते सुकृतं नरैः १८.
Whatever good deed is performed by men, with effort, by anyone.
शक्रो हि याज्ञिको विप्रा अश्वमेधशतेन वै १८.
O Brahmins, Indra is indeed a sacrificer, having performed a hundred horse sacrifices.
अर्थितं तत्फलं विद्धि पुनः कार्पण्यमाविशत् १८.
Know that the desired fruit was obtained, but again miserliness entered.
य इंद्र कृमिरेव स्यात्कृमिरिंद्रो हि जायते १८.
Whoever becomes a worm, O Indra, that worm is born as Indra.
दानाद्धि प्राप्यते ज्ञानं ज्ञानान्मोक्षो न संशयः १८.
Knowledge is attained through giving; from knowledge comes liberation, without doubt.
ददाति सर्वं सर्वेशः प्रसन्नात्मा सदाशिवः १८.
The Lord of all, Sadashiva, ever benevolent, gives everything.
अत्रैवोदाहरंतीममितिहासं पुरातनम् १८.
Here I will recount an ancient legend as an example.
कितवो हि महापापो देवब्राह्मणनिंदकः १८.
A gambler is indeed greatly sinful, a blasphemer of gods and Brahmins.
एकदा तु महापापात्कैतावाच्च जितं धनम् १८.
Once, from great sin and gambling, wealth was won.
कौपीनमात्रं तस्यैव कितवस्य प्रदृश्यते १८.
Only a loincloth was seen on that gambler.
गणिकार्थमुपादाय धावमानो गृहं प्रति १८.
Taking it for a courtesan, he ran toward his house.
