What shall we do today, O greatly fortunate one? The foremost demons have arrived.
Hearing their words, Brihaspati spoke.
These fierce ones, with mouths smeared with ghee, are gods incited by Bhrigu.
Hearing this virtuous speech, all the gods became filled with anxiety and fear.
Having been insulted by their actions, Mahendra spoke to his teacher.
Brihaspati spoke thus, and then left Amaravati.
In the same way, all the gods acted, abandoning Amaravati.
Yama became a crow, the lord of wealth became a heron in person.
Nairrita instantly became a pigeon and departed.
Thus, having assumed various forms, they left heaven.
All of them reported to Aditi, their mother, the deeds of the demons.
Hearing that unpleasant news, Aditi, longing for her sons, addressed the great sage: 'Having heard your words, you ought to act accordingly.'
Defeated by the demons, the gods abandoned Amaravati.
Hearing her words, Kashyapa spoke: 'O virtuous one, the demons are indeed invincible, for they are approved by Bhrigu.'
O beautiful one, their victory is indeed due to fierce austerity today.
O highly fortunate one, I will tell you this vow for the attainment of your purpose.
O goddess, in the month of Bhādrapada, on the tenth day, one should observe purity and self-restraint.
One should directly worship Hari, the lord who grants all desires.
O Lord, I am your devotee; for three days beginning with the tenth, I observe this.
With this very mantra, one should pray to the Lord of the universe.
One should eat on a plantain leaf, avoiding salt.
At night, one should keep vigil with effort, O slender-waisted one, and after feeding the best of twice-born, one should eat together with relatives.
In this way, one should perform the vow for twelve months without sloth, worshipping Viṣṇu with care, established upon a pot.
One should prepare, according to ability, a pot of gold or silver; the votary should fast with effort to pacify all faults.
Thus, as instructed by Kaśyapa, Aditi then performed accordingly.
By that vow, at the end of the year, Janārdana was fully satisfied.
The Lord, bearing the form of a young brāhmaṇa, with two arms and lotus-like eyes,
Seeing him, Aditi was filled with wonder in the midst of worship at that time.
Salutations again and again to you, the cause of causes, the soul of the universe, the creator of the universe, the consciousness itself.
Thus remembered by Aditi, he, the refuge of the gods, appeared.
