असुरं कंचिदाक्रम्य नटनं सा चकार ह
Seizing a certain Asura, she began to dance.
अथ तां समवेक्ष्य दुर्मदो हि ज्वलयामास च कोपवह्निना सः
Then, seeing her, the arrogant one was inflamed with the fire of anger.
ज्वलदग्निशिखाभदीर्घजिह्वापरिलीढोन्नतशैलशृंगभागः
His long tongue, blazing like a flame, licked the peaks of towering mountains.
अतिघर्घर दीर्घघोरनादस्फुटदंडभ्रममोहितामरो यः
With a terrible, deep, and dreadful roar, he bewildered the gods, his staff whirling indistinctly.
मृतये व्यगमद्बलित्रयाढ्यां मृगराजस्थितिभासुरां भवानीम्।।1.3.1.10.
For the sake of death, Bhavānī, shining with the strength of three armies and standing upon a lion, advanced.
शैलवर्षेण महता कुपितः समपूरयत्
In his rage, he filled the sky with a great shower of mountains.
शरवर्षेण महता तन्निवार्य विदूरतः
With a great shower of arrows, he drove it back from afar.
भिद्यमानोऽपि दैत्येंद्रः शैलसारप्रदुर्धरः
Though being struck, the lord of the Daityas, firm as the essence of a mountain, endured.
भिद्यमानः स खड्गेन चक्रैरसिभिर्ऋष्टिभिः
He was being struck by swords, discs, spears, and lances.
ततः सिंहाकृतिर्भीमः प्रचंडनिनदाननः
Then, a fearsome lion-shaped being, with a terrifying, roaring mouth, appeared.
देवीसिंहश्चपेटेन ताडयामास पाणिना
The lion of the goddess struck him with a slap of its paw.
अथ व्याघ्रतया प्राप्तः स्फुटव्यात्ताननो महान्
Then, taking the form of a tiger, a great being with a wide-gaping mouth approached.
दीर्घाभिर्न्नीलरेखाभिः पूर्णः पिंगलविग्रहः
His tawny body was marked with long, dark blue stripes.
मृगैरिव परित्रातुं मुच्यमानोऽग्रतो बली
Like a beast seeking rescue, he, though powerful, was being released in front.
आगच्छंतं रयाद्देवी भल्लेन शशिवर्चसा 1.3.1.11.
As he came forward in that form, the goddess struck him with a shining arrow.
स बाणस्तन्मुखे मग्नस्तद्रक्तेन समुक्षितः
That arrow lodged in his face, drenched with his blood.
स दैत्यो वारणो भूत्वा देवीमाश्वभ्युपागमत्
Then the demon, taking the form of an elephant, approached the goddess swiftly.
तं गजेंद्रं समायांतं मदक्लिन्नमहीतलम्
As that lord of elephants advanced, the earth was soaked with his rut.
अथ खड्गधरो वीरश्चर्मपाणिः समुद्गतः
Then a heroic sword-bearer, holding a shield, emerged.
देवी च विलसत्खड्गचक्रचक्रलसत्करा
And the goddess, her hands shining with sword and discus, stood forth.
भूयः स माहिषं रूपमास्थायासुरमायया
Again, by demonic illusion, he assumed the form of a buffalo.
अथ देवैमुनींद्रैश्च चोदितो गौतमो मुनिः
Then, urged by the gods and great sages, Gautama the sage spoke.
त्वयि सर्वस्य जगतः प्राणशक्तिः परा मता
In you is held the supreme vital power of all the universe.
किमेतदद्य मोहाय युद्धमारभ्यते त्वया
Why is this battle begun by you today, only to cause delusion?
भिन्नानामस्य देहानामुपसंहरणात्तव 1.3.1.11.
Because you withdraw the bodies of those who have been slain.
अन्यथा तृणकल्पस्य शत्रोरस्य निबर्हणे
Otherwise, in destroying this enemy, who is as insignificant as grass,
स्वशक्तिमवसंस्तभ्य समाकर्षयतां रिपोः
By restraining your own power and drawing forth the strength of the foe,
इति स्म बोधितातेन पुरा भगवती तदा
Thus, in ancient times, the Goddess was instructed by him.
अनेकगिरिसंकाशं देव्या विग्रहमात्मनः
The Goddess manifested a form of her own, resembling many mountains.
निष्पिष्टो विलुठन्क्रोशन्नाक्रांतश्च परिस्फुरन्
Crushed, rolling about, crying out, and seized, he writhed violently.
