एकपद्येन सर्वेषां महाहर्षो दिवौकसाम् तदा शची समायाता यत्र मुक्तः पुरंदरः॥ १७.
At that moment, all the gods were filled with immense joy, and Śacī arrived where Indra had been released.
तत्र शच्या समेतोऽसावभिषिक्तो महर्षिभिः १७.
There, united with Śacī, he was consecrated by the great sages.
एवं तदाभिषिक्तोऽसौ महेंद्र ऋषिभिः पुनः १७.
Thus, at that time, Mahendra was again anointed by the sages.
दिशः प्रसन्नतां याता निर्मलं चाभवन्नभः १७.
The directions became clear, and the sky turned spotless.
एवमादीन्यनेकानि मंगलानि ततोऽभवन् १७.
Then, many auspicious signs of various kinds appeared.
एवं प्रवर्तमाने तु महतां च महोत्सवे १७.
As that great festival of the mighty was taking place—
तत्रैव ब्रह्महत्या च पापिष्ठा पतिता भुवि १७.
Right there, the terrible Brahmahatyā (the sin of Brahminicide) fell to the earth.
पुण्यभूमिरिति ख्याता प्रसिद्धा लोकपावनी १७.
That place became renowned as sacred ground, famous as the purifier of the worlds.
मलस्य बहुसंभूत्या मालावेति प्रकीर्तिता १७.
Because of the accumulation of much impurity, it came to be called Mālāva.
षण्मासेष्वपतत्सर्वैः कृत्तं देवैः सवासवैः १७.
In six months, all the gods along with their attendants removed it.
इंद्रासने चोपविष्टो निरातंकः शचीपतिः शशंसुः सर्वमागत्य शक्रस्य च विचेष्टितम्॥ १७.
Seated on Indra’s throne, free from fear, the lord of Śacī was praised by all who gathered, and they recounted all that Śakra had done.
तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा वैरोचनी रुषान्वितः १७.
Hearing their words, Vairochani (Bali) was filled with anger.
तेनोक्तं बलये राजञ्जयस्यन्दनलब्धये १७.
He spoke to Bali, O King, to obtain the chariot of victory.
तेनोक्तो भृगुणा चैवं बलिर्यज्ञार्थमुद्यतः मेलयित्वा त्वरेणैव वैरोचनिरुदारधीः॥ १७.
Bali, of noble mind, was addressed in this way by Bhṛgu and, eager for sacrifice, quickly gathered the assembly.
प्रवर्तितो महायज्ञो भार्गवेण महात्मना १७.
The great-souled Bhārgava then commenced the great sacrifice.
हूयमाने तदाग्नौ तु कर्मणा विधिहेतुना १७.
As the fire was being offered oblations according to prescribed rites—
हयैश्चतुर्भिः संयुक्तो ध्वजेसिंहो महाप्रभः १७.
He was joined to four horses, his banner bore a lion, and he shone with great splendor.
ततश्चावभृथस्नानं चक्रे शुक्रप्रणोदितः १७.
Then, urged by Shukra, he performed the ritual bath after sacrifice.
दैत्यैः परिवृतः सद्यो योद्धुकामः पुरंदरम् १७.
Surrounded by the demons, Purandara was immediately eager to fight.
आगत्य सेनया सार्द्धमारुरो हामरावतीम् विर्शयित्वा सुचिरमूचुः सर्वे बृहस्पतिम्॥ १७.
Arriving together with his army, he entered Amaravati; after waiting for a long time, they all addressed Brihaspati.
किं कुर्मोऽद्य महाभाग आगता दैत्यपुंगवाः १७.
What shall we do today, O greatly fortunate one? The foremost demons have arrived.
तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा बृहस्पतिरभाषत॥ १७.
Hearing their words, Brihaspati spoke.
एते घृतमुखा घोरा भृगुणानोदिताः सुराः १७.
These fierce ones, with mouths smeared with ghee, are gods incited by Bhrigu.
एतन्निशम्य वचनं च गुणाभियुक्तं सर्वे सुराः समभवंस्त्रपयाभियुक्ताः १७.
Hearing this virtuous speech, all the gods became filled with anxiety and fear.
कर्मणा परिभूतो हि महेंद्रो गुरुमब्रवीत् १८.
Having been insulted by their actions, Mahendra spoke to his teacher.
बृहस्पतिरुवाचेदं त्यक्त्वा चैवामरावतीम् १८.
Brihaspati spoke thus, and then left Amaravati.
तथा चक्रुः सुराः सर्वे हित्वा चैवामरावतीम् १८.
In the same way, all the gods acted, abandoning Amaravati.
काको भूत्वा यमः साक्षात्कृकलासो धनाधिपः १८.
Yama became a crow, the lord of wealth became a heron in person.
नैर्ऋतस्तत्क्षणादेव कपोतोऽभूत्ततो गतः १८.
Nairrita instantly became a pigeon and departed.
एवं नानातनुभृतो हित्वा ते त्रिदिवं गताः १८.
Thus, having assumed various forms, they left heaven.
