All the world, both moving and unmoving, became enveloped in darkness.
Then, as they were being struck down, all the gods came to Brahmā.
Hearing this, the blessed Brahmā was deeply troubled and greatly astonished.
Then Brahmā, the grandsire of all worlds, together with the gods—
Om, homage to the one in the form of the liṅga, homage indeed to the great god.
Protect, protect, O Lord of the three worlds, Purandara who is seized by Vṛtra.
For the sake of benefit, Satī instructed Vidhi in the worship of the liṅga.
The remnants, the pedestal, and even the shadow-shrine—
Those fools who step over them are certainly to be punished; circumambulation and salutation are to be performed in conjunction with worship of the liṅga.
With single-mindedness, one should strive to worship the liṅga for the attainment of supreme good.
Hearing that bodiless voice, Brahmā and the other gods—
asked: 'How should we worship the liṅga, and by what method?'
'Which flowers are to be used in the evening and at midday as well?'
Then the voice from the sky began to explain in detail.
'Karavīra, arka flowers, and flowers of bṛhatī—
āragvadha, punnāga, bakula, and nāgakeśara—
many excellent flowers and many kinds of lotuses as well—
jāti flowers, mallikā, mogara, and blue flowers too—
these indeed are the flowers for worshipping the liṅga at midday.
These flowers are pure for worship at all three times; there is no doubt.
Thus, knowing these different forms of worship for the liṅga—
standing between the bull and the pedestal—
thus, Indra himself performed circumambulation in this manner.
Today, Purandara along with his elephant has been swallowed by Vṛtra.
By the great Rudra rite, he is freed at that very moment.
By that very instruction, the gods worshipped Rudra with devotion.
And so, with the Ekādaśa Rudra hymn, the gods indeed worshipped Rudra.
Desiring to free Purandara at once, they performed recitation, worship, and offering.
Then, seeing him emerge—the Lord of the gods, Indra, radiant with supreme splendor and endowed with great might—
The divine drums resounded, and many conches were blown in celebration.
