As Indra pondered thus, Vṛtra rebuked him, saying: 'It is by the curse of the great sage Gautama that you, O thousand-eyed one, were born as you are.'
Those heroes who restrain the group of senses truly prevail.
The battlefield is exceedingly terrible for the wicked; of this there is no doubt.
Thus the foremost of the Daityas reproached the lord of the gods.
With that great trident, Vṛtra, of wondrous might, advanced.
Observing him in such a state, the king of the gods, Śatakratu, took note.
Seeing him approaching, intent on killing Purandara, he opened his vast mouth wide, for he had come to devour Purandara.
Then the mighty and radiant lord of the Daityas wished to swallow him.
Indra, bearing the thunderbolt and his crown, danced and roared.
A great outcry arose among the gods, who were witnessing the scene.
All the world, both moving and unmoving, became enveloped in darkness.
Then, as they were being struck down, all the gods came to Brahmā.
Hearing this, the blessed Brahmā was deeply troubled and greatly astonished.
Then Brahmā, the grandsire of all worlds, together with the gods—
Om, homage to the one in the form of the liṅga, homage indeed to the great god.
Protect, protect, O Lord of the three worlds, Purandara who is seized by Vṛtra.
For the sake of benefit, Satī instructed Vidhi in the worship of the liṅga.
The remnants, the pedestal, and even the shadow-shrine—
Those fools who step over them are certainly to be punished; circumambulation and salutation are to be performed in conjunction with worship of the liṅga.
With single-mindedness, one should strive to worship the liṅga for the attainment of supreme good.
Hearing that bodiless voice, Brahmā and the other gods—
asked: 'How should we worship the liṅga, and by what method?'
'Which flowers are to be used in the evening and at midday as well?'
Then the voice from the sky began to explain in detail.
'Karavīra, arka flowers, and flowers of bṛhatī—
āragvadha, punnāga, bakula, and nāgakeśara—
many excellent flowers and many kinds of lotuses as well—
jāti flowers, mallikā, mogara, and blue flowers too—
these indeed are the flowers for worshipping the liṅga at midday.
These flowers are pure for worship at all three times; there is no doubt.
