Long ago, a curse was given to him by Pārvatī in my presence.
He wanders in a radiant chariot that I granted him.
Therefore, know that he is unconquerable in battle, O best among warriors.
Thinking thus, Śakra accepted that condition.
Waiting for an opening in Vṛtra, he approached with a thousand (gods).
Standing outside the altar, with the thunderbolt in hand, and with permission.
Once, on the Narmadā river, Vṛtra, the foremost among demons,
Indra suffered defeat and was led by the gods back to heaven.
Vṛtra, always confident and endowed with strength,
Was seen by Indra, surrounded by mighty gods.
In that region, united on the thirteenth day of the lunar fortnight at Maṃdavāra,
They performed circumambulation and salutations according to the prescribed method.
By the greatness of the Pradoṣa vow, the mighty thunderbolt-holder shone.
Vṛtra too, endowed with austerity, was great at the time of Pradoṣa.
At the time of nightfall, the fruit gained by his austerity was lost due to sleep.
And by the curse of the goddess, Vṛtra was born, his desires unfulfilled.
When the time of twilight arrived, Vṛtra went and sat at the sacred ford.
The lord of Śacī, ever seeking a flaw, noticed a gap in his observance.
Then the Daityas, fierce and of terrible might, became greatly enraged.
Thereupon, a battle arose with those exceedingly powerful warriors.
Then the Daityas and the gods, both full of energy, fought with each other.
Clad in many weapons, a most dreadful battle unfolded; then Vṛtra, fully armored, seized his terrible spear.
Standing before Indra, he roared, terrifying all beings.
Then Mahendra, mounting Airāvata, shone brilliantly.
Fanned with fly-whisks, he addressed the foremost of the Daityas.
Engage me in battle, Vṛtra, equipped with your great strength.
Thus addressed, Vṛtra then spoke these words.
So thinking, and considering that thunderbolt to be extremely unbearable, Indra, with the consent of the wise priest, made it as it was, with a hundred edges.
Taking up his mace, Indra struck Vṛtra with that mace.
Seeing his own mace rendered useless, Indra fell into thought.
