रे मूढ सर्वेषु जनेष्वभिज्ञस्त्वमेव एवाद्य न चापरे जनाः १७.
O fool, among all people, you alone are knowledgeable today, and not the others.
एवं शप्तस्तया देव्या भवान्या राजसत्तमः १७.
Thus was the best of kings cursed by the goddess Bhavānī.
आसुरीं योनिमासाद्य वृत्रोनाम्नाऽभवत्तदा १७.
Then, taking birth in a demonic womb, he became known as Vṛtra.
तपसा तेन महता अजेयो वृत्र उच्यत १७.
Because of his great austerity, Vṛtra is said to be invincible.
जहि वृत्रं महादैत्यं देवानां कार्यसिद्धये सोद्यापनविधिं ब्रूहि प्रदोषस्य च मेऽधुना॥ १७.
Slay the great demon Vṛtra for the accomplishment of the gods' purpose; now tell me the proper method of worship at dusk.
कार्तिके मासि संप्राप्ते मंदवारे त्रयोदशी १७.
When the month of Kārtika arrives, on the thirteenth day, which falls on a Monday—
वृषभो राजतः कार्यः पृष्ठे तस्य सुपीठकम् १७.
A bull made of silver should be prepared, with a fine seat on its back.
पंचवक्त्रं दशभुजमर्द्धांगे गिरिजां सतीम् १७.
The chaste Girijā should be depicted as having five faces, ten arms, and a radiant body.
सवृषं ताम्रपत्रे च वस्त्रेण परिगुंठिते १७.
With the bull, on a copper plate, and draped in cloth—
विधिना जागरं कुर्याद्रात्रौ श्रद्धासमन्वितः १७.
One should keep vigil at night with proper rites, filled with faith.
गोक्षीरस्नानं देवेश गोक्षीरेण मया कृतम् १७.
O Lord of the gods, I have bathed you with cow's milk.
दध्ना चैव मया देव स्नपनं क्रियतेऽधुना १७.
O god, I am now performing your ablution with curd.
सर्पिषा च मया देव स्नपनं क्रियतेऽधुना १७.
O god, I am now performing your ablution with ghee.
इदं मधु मया दत्तं तव प्रीत्यर्थमेव च १७.
This honey has been offered by me, solely for your pleasure.
सितया देवदेवेश स्नपनं क्रियतेऽधुना १७.
Now, the bathing of the Lord of gods is performed with Sita.
एवं पंचामृतेनैव स्नपनीयो वृषध्वजः अनेनैव च मंत्रेण उमाकांतस्य तृष्टये॥ १७.
Thus, the Bull-bannered One is to be bathed with the five nectars, and with this very mantra, for the satisfaction of Umā's beloved.
अर्घ्योऽसि त्वमुमाकांत अर्घेणानेन वै प्रभो १७.
You are the arghya, O beloved of Umā; with this arghya, O Lord.
मया दत्तं च ते पाद्यं पुष्पगंधसमन्वितम् १७.
I have given you water for washing the feet, accompanied by flowers and fragrance.
विष्टरं विष्टरेणैव मया दत्तं च वै प्रभो १७.
I have given you a seat, O Lord, with a proper seat.
आचमनीयं मया दत्तं तव विश्वेश्वर प्रभो १७.
I have given you water for sipping, O Lord of the universe.
ब्रह्मग्रन्थिसमायुक्तं ब्रह्मकर्मप्रवर्तकम् १७.
Endowed with the knot of Brahma, it initiates Brahma's ritual action.
सुगंधं चंदनं देव मया दत्तं च वै प्रभो १७.
I have given you fragrant sandalwood, O Lord.
दीपं हि परमं शंभो घृतप्रज्वलितं मया १७.
I have offered you the supreme lamp, O Śambhu, kindled with ghee.
दीपं विशिष्टं परमं सर्वौषधिविजृंभितम् १७.
The lamp, most excellent and supreme, infused with all medicinal herbs.
दीपावलिं मया दत्तां कृहाण परमेश्वर १७.
I have given you a row of lamps; accept it, O Supreme Lord.
फलदीपादिनैवेद्यतांबूलादिक्रमेण च १७.
In order, fruit, lamp, food offering, betel, and so forth.
पश्चाज्जागरणं कार्यं गृहे वा देवतालये गीतवादित्रनृत्येन अर्चनीयः सदाशिवः॥ १७.
Afterwards, vigil should be observed, either at home or in the temple; Sadāśiva is to be worshipped with song, music, and dance.
अनेनैव विधानेन प्रदोषोद्यापने विधिः १७.
With this very procedure, the rite for the evening observance is prescribed.
गुरुणा कथितं सर्वं तच्चकार शतक्रतुः १७.
Everything was spoken by the teacher, and Śatakratu performed it.
वृत्रं प्रति सुरैः सार्द्धं युयुधे च शतक्रतुः १७.
Śatakratu fought against Vṛtra together with the gods.
