लिंगरूपाय लिंगाय लिंगानां पतये नमः १७.
To him whose form is the liṅga, who is the liṅga, and the lord of all liṅgas, I bow.
नमोनमः कारणकारणाय ते मृत्युंजयायात्मभवस्वरूपिणे १७.
Repeated salutations to you, the cause of all causes, the conqueror of death, whose nature is self-born.
नाम्नां शतं महेशस्य उच्चार्यं व्रतिना तदा कार्यं प्रदोषसमये तुष्ट्यर्थं संकरस्य च॥ १७.
At that time, the devotee should recite the hundred names of the great Lord, at dusk, to please Śaṅkara.
एवं व्रतं समुद्दिष्टं तव शक्र महामते १७.
Thus, O Śakra of great wisdom, the observance has been prescribed for you.
शंभोः प्रसादात्सर्वं ते भविष्यति जयादिकम्॥ १७.
By the grace of Śambhu, all your aims, including victory, will be accomplished.
वृत्रो ह्ययं महातेजा दैतेयस्तपसा पुरा १७.
This Vṛtra, of great splendor, was formerly a Daitya by austerity.
नाम्ना चित्ररथो राजा वनं चित्ररथस्य तत् १७.
By name, he was King Citraratha, and that forest belonged to Citraratha.
यस्मिन्वने महाभाग न संति च षडूर्मयः तस्य राज्ञः शिवेनैव दत्तं यानं महाद्भुतम्॥ १७.
In that forest, O greatly fortunate one, the six waves do not exist; to that king, Śiva himself gave a wondrous vehicle.
कामगं किंकिणीयुक्तं सिद्धचारणसेवितम् १७.
It moved at will, adorned with tinkling bells, and was served by Siddhas and Cāraṇas.
ततस्तेनैव यानेन पृथिवीं पर्यटन्पुरा १७.
Then, with that very vehicle, he once traveled throughout the earth.
एकदा पर्यटन्राजा नाम्ना चित्ररथो महान् १७.
Once, the great king named Citraratha was journeying.
सभातलं महेशस्य गणैश्चैव विराजितम् १७.
He beheld the assembly hall of Maheśa, resplendent with his attendants.
निरीक्ष्य देव्या सहितं सदाशिवं देव्यान्वितं वाक्यमिदं बभाषे॥ १७.
Seeing Sadāśiva together with the goddess, he spoke these words in her presence.
वयं च शंभो विषयान्विताश्च मंत्र्यादयः स्त्रीजिताश्चापि चान्ये १७.
We, O Śambhu, are attached to pleasures, and so are ministers and others, and others are conquered by women.
एतद्वाक्यं निशम्याथ महेशः प्रहसन्निव १७.
Hearing these words, Maheśa smiled.
भयं लोकापवादाच्च सर्वेषामपि नान्यथा १७.
Because of fear and public reproach, it is not otherwise for all.
तथापि उपहासो मे कृतो राज्ञा हि दुर्जरः १७.
Still, the king has made a mockery of me, which is hard to endure.
रे दुरात्मन्कथं त्वज्ञ शंकरश्चोपहासितः १७.
O wicked one, how is it that you, ignorant as you are, have mocked Śaṅkara?
साधूनां समचित्तानामुपहासं करोति यः १७.
Whoever mocks the virtuous who are even-minded—
एते मुनींद्राश्च महानुभावास्तथा ह्यमी ऋषयो वेदगर्भाः १७.
These are the foremost sages, of great power, and these seers are filled with the Vedas.
रे मूढ सर्वेषु जनेष्वभिज्ञस्त्वमेव एवाद्य न चापरे जनाः १७.
O fool, among all people, you alone are knowledgeable today, and not the others.
एवं शप्तस्तया देव्या भवान्या राजसत्तमः १७.
Thus was the best of kings cursed by the goddess Bhavānī.
आसुरीं योनिमासाद्य वृत्रोनाम्नाऽभवत्तदा १७.
Then, taking birth in a demonic womb, he became known as Vṛtra.
तपसा तेन महता अजेयो वृत्र उच्यत १७.
Because of his great austerity, Vṛtra is said to be invincible.
जहि वृत्रं महादैत्यं देवानां कार्यसिद्धये सोद्यापनविधिं ब्रूहि प्रदोषस्य च मेऽधुना॥ १७.
Slay the great demon Vṛtra for the accomplishment of the gods' purpose; now tell me the proper method of worship at dusk.
कार्तिके मासि संप्राप्ते मंदवारे त्रयोदशी १७.
When the month of Kārtika arrives, on the thirteenth day, which falls on a Monday—
वृषभो राजतः कार्यः पृष्ठे तस्य सुपीठकम् १७.
A bull made of silver should be prepared, with a fine seat on its back.
पंचवक्त्रं दशभुजमर्द्धांगे गिरिजां सतीम् १७.
The chaste Girijā should be depicted as having five faces, ten arms, and a radiant body.
सवृषं ताम्रपत्रे च वस्त्रेण परिगुंठिते १७.
With the bull, on a copper plate, and draped in cloth—
विधिना जागरं कुर्याद्रात्रौ श्रद्धासमन्वितः १७.
One should keep vigil at night with proper rites, filled with faith.
