इत्युक्त्वा तां स्वपत्नीं स प्रेषयामास चाश्रमम् १६.
Having spoken thus to his wife, he sent her away to the hermitage.
समाधिना परेणैव विसृज्य स्वं कलेवरम् १६.
With supreme concentration, he abandoned his own body.
दधीचिनामा मुनिवृंदवर्यः शिवप्रियः शिवदीक्षाभियुक्तः १६.
Dadichi, foremost among the assembly of sages, beloved of Shiva, devoted to Shiva's initiation.
ततः सर्वे सुरगणा दृष्ट्वा तं विलयं गतम् १७.
Then all the hosts of gods, seeing him gone to dissolution,
सुरभिं चाह्वयित्वाथ तदोवाच शचीपतिः १७.
Summoned Surabhi, and then the lord of Shachi spoke.
तथेति च वचोमत्वा तत्क्षणादेव लिह्य तत् १७.
Having replied, 'So be it,' she immediately licked it.
जगृहुस्तानि चास्थीनि चक्रुः शस्त्राणि वै सुराः १७.
They took those bones and the gods fashioned weapons.
अन्यानि चास्थीनि बहूनि तस्य ऋषेस्तदानीं जगृहुः सुराश्च १७.
And many other bones of that sage, the gods took at that time.
शस्त्राणि कृत्वा ते सर्वे महाबलपराक्रमाः १७.
Having made weapons, all those of great strength and valor,
ततः सुवर्च्चाश्च दधीचिपत्नी या प्रेषिता सा सुरकार्यसिद्धये १७.
Then Suvarcā, Dadichi's wife, who had been sent for the accomplishment of the gods' purpose,
ज्ञात्वा च तत्सर्वमिदं सुराणां कृत्यं तदानीं च चुकोप साध्वी १७.
Learning all this, the work of the gods at that time, the virtuous woman became angry.
अहो सुरा दुष्टतराश्च सर्वे सर्वे ह्यशक्ताश्च तथैव लुब्धाः १७.
Ah, the gods are all most wicked, all powerless, and likewise greedy.
एव शापं ददौ तेषां सुराणां सा तपस्विनी १७.
Thus, that ascetic woman pronounced a curse upon those gods.
निर्गतो जठराद्गर्भो दधीचस्य महात्मनः १७.
The embryo departed from the womb of the great-souled Dadichi.
प्रहस्य जननी गर्भमुवाच रुषितेक्षणा १७.
Laughing, the mother addressed the embryo, her eyes blazing with anger.
अश्वत्थस्य महाभाग सर्वेषां सफलो भवेः पतिमन्वगमत्साध्वी परमेण समाधिना॥ १७.
O most fortunate one, you will be fruitful for all under the Ashvattha tree; the virtuous woman followed her husband with supreme concentration.
एवं दधीचपत्नी सा पतिना स्वर्गमाव्रजत्॥ १७.
Thus, that wife of Dadhīci went to heaven together with her husband.
ते देवाः कृतशस्त्रास्त्रा दैत्यान्प्रति समुत्सुकाः १७.
Those gods, having obtained weapons and missiles, were eager to confront the daityas.
गुरुं पुरस्कृत्य तदाज्ञया ते गणाः सुराणां बहवस्तदानीम् १७.
Then, with their teacher at the forefront and by his command, many hosts of the gods assembled.
समागतानुपसृत्य देवांश्चेंद्रपुरोगमान् १७.
Approaching those who had gathered, the gods, with Indra at their head, drew near.
यथा मेरोश्च शिखरं परिपूर्णं प्रदृश्यते १७.
Just as the peak of Mount Meru appears completely filled, so it was seen.
तेन दृष्टो महेन्द्रश्च महेंद्रेण महासुरः १७.
There, Mahendra was seen by the great asura, and the great asura by Mahendra.
तदा ते बद्धवैराश्च देवदैत्याः परस्परम् १७.
Then, the gods and daityas, bound by mutual enmity, faced each other.
वादित्राणि च भीमानि वाद्यमानानि सर्वशः १७.
Terrifying instruments were sounded everywhere.
वाद्यमानेषु तूर्येषु ते सर्वे त्वरयान्विताः १७.
As the trumpets were played, all of them became filled with urgency.
तदा देवासुरे युद्धे त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम् १७.
Then, in the battle between gods and asuras, the three worlds with all their moving and unmoving beings were involved.
छेदिताः स्फोटिताश्चैव केचिच्छस्त्रैर्द्विधा कृताः १७.
Some were cut down, others shattered, and some were split in two by weapons.
भल्लैश्चेरुर्हताः केचिद्व्यंगभूता दिवौकसः १७.
Some celestial beings, struck by arrows, wandered about maimed.
शिरांसि पतितान्येव बहूनिच नभस्तलात् १७.
Many heads fell from the sky to the ground.
प्रवर्तितं मध्यदेशे सर्वबूतक्षयावहम् १७.
In the midst of the field, destruction of all beings was set in motion.
