अदृष्टं परमं धर्म्यं विधिना परमेण हि १६.
The unseen, supreme, righteous act was performed according to the highest ordinance.
निःस्पृहं तस्य तद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा ब्रह्मा ह्युवाच तम् १६.
Hearing those words, free from desire, Brahma spoke to him.
याचस्व तस्य चास्थीनि दधीचेः कार्यगौरवात् १६.
Request from him the bones of Dadhichi, for the sake of the important task.
तथेति गत्वा ते सर्वे दधीचस्याश्रमं शुभम् १६.
So saying, all of them went to the auspicious hermitage of Dadhichi.
मार्जारमूषकाश्चैव परस्परमुदान्विताः १६.
Cats and mice, indeed, were joyfully together with one another.
तथा जात्यश्च विविधाः क्रीडायुक्ताः परस्परम् १६.
Likewise, various creatures of different kinds were engaged in play with each other.
एवंविधान्यनेकानि ह्यश्चर्याणि तदाश्रमे १६.
Many such wondrous things were seen in that hermitage.
अथासने मुनिश्रेष्ठं ददृशुः परमास्थितम् १६.
Then they saw the foremost sage seated in supreme concentration.
विभावसुं द्वितीयं वा सुवर्चसहितं तदा १६.
At that time, Vibhavasu, or another radiant one, was present with him.
तं प्रणम्य ततो देवा वचनं चेदमब्रुवन् १६.
Having bowed to him, the gods then spoke these words.
निशम्य वचनं तेषां देवानां भुनिरब्रवीत् १६.
Hearing the words of the gods, the sage replied.
प्रयच्छामि न संदेहो नान्यथा मम भाषितम् १६.
I will give; there is no doubt. My word is never otherwise.
भयभीता वयं विप्र भवद्दर्शनकांक्षिणः १६.
We are frightened, O sage, and have come desiring to see you.
सम्प्राप्ता विद्धि तत्सर्वं दातुमर्होऽथ सुव्रत॥ १६.
Know that we have arrived; you ought to give all that is needed, O virtuous one.
निशम्य वचनं तेषां किं दातव्यं तदुच्यताम्॥ १६.
Hearing their words, he said: Let it be told what is to be given.
ततो देवाब्रुवन्विप्र दैत्यानां निधनायनः १६.
Then the gods spoke: O sage, it is for the destruction of the demons.
प्रहस्योवाच विप्रर्षिस्तिष्ठध्वं क्षणमेव हि १६.
The sage, smiling, said: Remain here for just a moment.
इत्युक्त्वा तानथो पत्नीं समाहूय सुवर्चसम् १६.
Having said this to them, he then called his wife, Suvarcasa.
अस्थ्यर्थं याचितो देवैस्त्यजाम्येतत्कलेवरम् १६.
Asked by the gods for my bones, I relinquish this body.
मयि याते ब्रह्मलोकं त्वं स्वधर्मेण तत्र माम् १६.
When I depart for Brahma's world, you, by your own duty, should remember me there.
इत्युक्त्वा तां स्वपत्नीं स प्रेषयामास चाश्रमम् १६.
Having spoken thus to his wife, he sent her away to the hermitage.
समाधिना परेणैव विसृज्य स्वं कलेवरम् १६.
With supreme concentration, he abandoned his own body.
दधीचिनामा मुनिवृंदवर्यः शिवप्रियः शिवदीक्षाभियुक्तः १६.
Dadichi, foremost among the assembly of sages, beloved of Shiva, devoted to Shiva's initiation.
ततः सर्वे सुरगणा दृष्ट्वा तं विलयं गतम् १७.
Then all the hosts of gods, seeing him gone to dissolution,
सुरभिं चाह्वयित्वाथ तदोवाच शचीपतिः १७.
Summoned Surabhi, and then the lord of Shachi spoke.
तथेति च वचोमत्वा तत्क्षणादेव लिह्य तत् १७.
Having replied, 'So be it,' she immediately licked it.
जगृहुस्तानि चास्थीनि चक्रुः शस्त्राणि वै सुराः १७.
They took those bones and the gods fashioned weapons.
अन्यानि चास्थीनि बहूनि तस्य ऋषेस्तदानीं जगृहुः सुराश्च १७.
And many other bones of that sage, the gods took at that time.
शस्त्राणि कृत्वा ते सर्वे महाबलपराक्रमाः १७.
Having made weapons, all those of great strength and valor,
ततः सुवर्च्चाश्च दधीचिपत्नी या प्रेषिता सा सुरकार्यसिद्धये १७.
Then Suvarcā, Dadichi's wife, who had been sent for the accomplishment of the gods' purpose,
