शच्या समेतो हि तदा पुरंदरो बभूव विश्वाधिपतिर्महात्मा १६.
Then, united with Shachi, Purandara became the lord of the universe, the great-souled one.
तदाग्नयः शोभना वायवश्च सर्वे ग्रहाः सुप्रभाः शांतियुक्ताः १६.
At that time, the fires were splendid, the winds were all auspicious, and all the planets were radiant and filled with peace.
प्रसन्नानि तथा ह्यासन्मनांसि च मनस्विनाम्॥ १६.
Likewise, the minds of the wise became serene.
नद्यश्चामृतवाहिन्यो वृक्षा ह्यासन्सदाफलाः १६.
The rivers flowed with nectar, and the trees always bore fruit.
ऐकपद्येन सर्वेषामिंद्रलोकनिवासिनाम् १६.
All the inhabitants of Indra's world walked in harmony.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे त्वष्टा दृष्ट्वा चेंद्रमहोत्सवम् १६.
Meanwhile, Tvaṣṭṛ, seeing this great festival of Indra,
जगाम निर्वेदपरस्तपस्तप्तुं सुदारुणम् १६.
became disillusioned and went to undertake severe austerities.
त्वष्टारमब्रवीत्तुष्टो वरं वरय सुव्रत वरं पुत्रो हि दात्वोय देवानां हि भयावहः॥ १६.
Pleased, he said to Tvaṣṭṛ, 'Choose a boon, O steadfast one; I shall grant you a son as a boon, who will bring fear to the gods.'
तथेति च वरो दत्तो ब्रह्मणा परमेष्ठिना १६.
'So be it,' he replied, and the boon was granted by Brahmā, the supreme lord.
वृत्रनामांकितस्तत्र दैत्यो हि परमाद्भुतः १६.
There, a demon of wondrous power was born, named Vṛtra.
पातालान्निर्गता दैत्या ये पुराऽमृतमंथने १६.
The demons who had once emerged from the underworld during the churning for nectar,
सर्वं महीतलं व्याप्तं तेनैकेन महात्मना॥ १६.
were all encompassed on the earth by that one great soul.
तदा सर्वेऽपि ऋषयो वध्यमानास्तपस्विनः १६.
At that time, all the sages, ascetics, were being slain.
तथा चेंद्रादयो देवा गंधर्वाः समरुद्गणाः १६.
Likewise, Indra and the other gods, the Gandharvas, and the hosts of Maruts.
भवद्वधार्थं जनितस्तपसा परमेण तु १६.
He was born through supreme austerity for the purpose of your destruction.
तथापि यत्नः क्रियतां यथा वध्यो भवेदसौ १६.
Still, let effort be made so that he may become liable to be slain.
यदा इंद्रो हि हत्याया विमुक्तः स्थापितो दिवि १६.
When Indra was freed from the guilt of killing and established in heaven.
शस्त्राण्यस्त्राण्यनेकानि संक्षिप्तानि ह्यबुद्धितः १६.
Many weapons and missiles were thrown down, indeed, without awareness.
तच्छ्रुत्वा प्रहसन्वाक्यं देवान्ब्रह्मा तदाऽब्रवीत् १६.
Hearing this, Brahma laughed and spoke to the gods at that time.
गत्वा देवास्तदा सर्वे नापश्यन्स्वं स्वमायुधम् १६.
Then all the gods went, but did not find their own weapons.
पुनर्ब्रह्माणमागात्य ऊचुः सर्वे मुनेर्वचः॥ १६.
Again, they approached Brahma and all spoke the sage's words.
ब्रह्मोवाच तदा देवान्सर्वेषां कार्यसिद्धये १६.
Brahma spoke then to all the gods, for the accomplishment of their purpose.
तच्छ्रुत्वा ब्राह्मणो वाक्यं शक्रो वचनमब्रवीत्॥ १६.
Hearing the Brahman's words, Shakra spoke his statement.
विश्वरूपो हतो देव देवानां कार्यसिद्धये १६.
Viśvarūpa was slain, O god, for the accomplishment of the gods' purpose.
तथा पुरोधसा चैव निःश्रीकस्तत्क्षणात्कृतः १६.
And the priest, too, was rendered devoid of prosperity at that very moment.
दधीचं घातयित्वा वै तस्यास्थीनि बहून्यपि १६.
Having killed Dadhīca, his many bones were taken.
त्वष्ट्रा हि जनितो यो वै वृत्रो नामैष दैत्यराट् शक्रेणोक्तं निशम्याथ ब्रह्मा वाक्यमुवाच ह॥ १६.
By Tvaṣṭṛ was born he who is called Vṛtra, the king of the demons; hearing what Shakra said, Brahma spoke these words.
अर्थशास्त्रपरेणैव विधिना तमबोधयत् हंतुकामं जिघांसीयान्न तेन ब्रह्महा भवेत्॥ १६.
By the method prescribed in the science of law, he instructed him; one who desires to kill, who intends to slay, would not thereby become a slayer of a Brahman.
दधीचस्य वधाद्ब्रह्मन्नहं भीतो न संशयः १६.
O Brahman, from the killing of Dadhīca, I am not afraid, without doubt.
अतो न कार्यमस्माभिर्ब्राह्मणानां तु हेलनम् १६.
Therefore, we must not act with disrespect toward Brahmans.
