Then, the waters, having assembled, addressed all the priests.
Through contact and association with us—by bathing, purification, eating, and so on—
Hearing their words, Bṛhaspati spoke.
May the waters purify all those who dwell among the moving and unmoving.
Today itself, the portion of the guilt of killing should be accepted for the accomplishment of all purposes.
A woman commits sin by that sin alone, and not otherwise.
You have heard, but you understand nothing; let this matter be considered beforehand.
Let there be no fear for any of you, O bright-eyed ones, from this sin; for the portion of killing belongs to all of you, just as you desire.
Thus, four portions were assigned by the gods.
Then, Indra became free from sin and was consecrated as the great Indra.
Then, united with Shachi, Purandara became the lord of the universe, the great-souled one.
At that time, the fires were splendid, the winds were all auspicious, and all the planets were radiant and filled with peace.
Likewise, the minds of the wise became serene.
The rivers flowed with nectar, and the trees always bore fruit.
All the inhabitants of Indra's world walked in harmony.
Meanwhile, Tvaṣṭṛ, seeing this great festival of Indra,
became disillusioned and went to undertake severe austerities.
Pleased, he said to Tvaṣṭṛ, 'Choose a boon, O steadfast one; I shall grant you a son as a boon, who will bring fear to the gods.'
'So be it,' he replied, and the boon was granted by Brahmā, the supreme lord.
There, a demon of wondrous power was born, named Vṛtra.
The demons who had once emerged from the underworld during the churning for nectar,
were all encompassed on the earth by that one great soul.
At that time, all the sages, ascetics, were being slain.
Likewise, Indra and the other gods, the Gandharvas, and the hosts of Maruts.
He was born through supreme austerity for the purpose of your destruction.
Still, let effort be made so that he may become liable to be slain.
When Indra was freed from the guilt of killing and established in heaven.
Many weapons and missiles were thrown down, indeed, without awareness.
Hearing this, Brahma laughed and spoke to the gods at that time.
Then all the gods went, but did not find their own weapons.
