पृथ्वयास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा बृहस्पतिरुवाच ताम् १६.
Hearing these words of the earth, Bṛhaspati spoke to her.
यदा यदुकुले श्रीमान्वासुदेवो भविष्यति १६.
Whenever the illustrious Vāsudeva is born in the Yadu lineage—
कुरु वाक्यं त्वमस्माकं नात्र कार्या विचारणा॥ १६.
—then you must act according to our words; there should be no hesitation about this.
इत्युक्ता पृथिवी तेषां निष्पापा साकरोद्वचः १६.
Thus addressed by them, the earth, now free from guilt, spoke these words.
हत्यांशो हि ग्रहीतव्यो भवद्भिः कार्यसिद्धये १६.
A portion of the guilt of killing must be accepted by you all for the accomplishment of the task.
वयं सर्वे तथा भूतास्तापसानां फलप्रदाः १६.
We all, in this way, shall become givers of fruits to ascetics.
पापिनो हि महाभागास्तस्मात्सर्वं विमृश्यताम् १६.
For indeed, the sinful ones are greatly fortunate; therefore, let everything be considered.
मा चिंता क्रियतां सर्वैः प्रसादाच्च शतक्रतोः १६.
Let no one be anxious, for by the grace of Śatakratu (Indra),
ततो विटपिनो नित्यं यूयं सर्वे भविष्यथ १६.
—thereafter, you all shall always become trees.
ततो ह्यपः समाहूय ऊचुः सर्वे दिवौकसः १६.
Then, having summoned the waters, all the celestial beings spoke.
तदा ह्यापो मिलित्वाथ ऊचुः सर्वाः पुरोधसम् १६.
Then, the waters, having assembled, addressed all the priests.
अस्मत्संपर्कसंबंधात्स्नानशौचाशनादिभिः १६.
Through contact and association with us—by bathing, purification, eating, and so on—
तासां वचनमाकर्ण्य बृहस्पतिरुवाच ह १६.
Hearing their words, Bṛhaspati spoke.
आपः पुनंतु सर्वेषां चराचरनिवासिनाम् १६.
May the waters purify all those who dwell among the moving and unmoving.
अद्यैव ग्राह्ये हत्यांशः सर्वकार्यार्थसिद्धये १६.
Today itself, the portion of the guilt of killing should be accepted for the accomplishment of all purposes.
पापमाचरते योषा तेन पापेन नान्यथा १६.
A woman commits sin by that sin alone, and not otherwise.
श्रुतमस्ति न ते किंचिद्धेपुरोधो विमृश्यताम् १६.
You have heard, but you understand nothing; let this matter be considered beforehand.
मा भयं क्रियतां सर्वाः पापादस्मात्सुलोचनाः हत्यांशो यो हि सर्वासां यथाकामित्वमेव च॥ १६.
Let there be no fear for any of you, O bright-eyed ones, from this sin; for the portion of killing belongs to all of you, just as you desire.
एवमंशाश्च त्यायाश्चत्वारः कल्पिताः सुरैः १६.
Thus, four portions were assigned by the gods.
निष्पापो हि तदा जातो महेंद्रो ह्यभिषेचितः १६.
Then, Indra became free from sin and was consecrated as the great Indra.
शच्या समेतो हि तदा पुरंदरो बभूव विश्वाधिपतिर्महात्मा १६.
Then, united with Shachi, Purandara became the lord of the universe, the great-souled one.
तदाग्नयः शोभना वायवश्च सर्वे ग्रहाः सुप्रभाः शांतियुक्ताः १६.
At that time, the fires were splendid, the winds were all auspicious, and all the planets were radiant and filled with peace.
प्रसन्नानि तथा ह्यासन्मनांसि च मनस्विनाम्॥ १६.
Likewise, the minds of the wise became serene.
नद्यश्चामृतवाहिन्यो वृक्षा ह्यासन्सदाफलाः १६.
The rivers flowed with nectar, and the trees always bore fruit.
ऐकपद्येन सर्वेषामिंद्रलोकनिवासिनाम् १६.
All the inhabitants of Indra's world walked in harmony.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे त्वष्टा दृष्ट्वा चेंद्रमहोत्सवम् १६.
Meanwhile, Tvaṣṭṛ, seeing this great festival of Indra,
जगाम निर्वेदपरस्तपस्तप्तुं सुदारुणम् १६.
became disillusioned and went to undertake severe austerities.
त्वष्टारमब्रवीत्तुष्टो वरं वरय सुव्रत वरं पुत्रो हि दात्वोय देवानां हि भयावहः॥ १६.
Pleased, he said to Tvaṣṭṛ, 'Choose a boon, O steadfast one; I shall grant you a son as a boon, who will bring fear to the gods.'
तथेति च वरो दत्तो ब्रह्मणा परमेष्ठिना १६.
'So be it,' he replied, and the boon was granted by Brahmā, the supreme lord.
वृत्रनामांकितस्तत्र दैत्यो हि परमाद्भुतः १६.
There, a demon of wondrous power was born, named Vṛtra.
