When you wished for Nahusha to ascend the throne by unanimous consent,
The kingdom of Mahendra was bestowed by all the gods and great sages.
Gandharvas, Apsaras, Yakshas, Vidyadharas, and mighty serpents,
Then a grand festival arose throughout the city of the gods.
There, singers sang and musicians played their instruments.
At that time, he was anointed by Brihaspati and the foremost among them.
He was honored with hymns to the gods, as is done in the worship of planets.
Thus, Nahusha, the great king of the gods, was worshipped by all.
Adorned with fragrant lamps, fine garments, splendid ornaments, and his body radiant,
Thus, endowed with supreme arts, he was honored by the hosts of divine sages.
Why does Indrani not come to me today?
Hearing Nahusha's words, Brihaspati, of noble mind,
By the ill-omened act of Indra, Nahusha was brought here.
Śacī, laughing, spoke to the sinless Bṛhaspati: 'He has performed only ninety-nine horse sacrifices.'
Therefore, he is not worthy,' she said, laughing, to the faultless Bṛhaspati; 'Let him come here and obtain me only by being carried in a palanquin.'
Bṛhaspati, hastening, went and spoke to him, saying, 'So be it.'
Thinking 'So be it,' King Nahusha, deluded by desire, agreed.
He, recalling for a long time with his intellect the ascetic Brahmins,
And in my heart it remains: by two of them, for the sake of attaining her.
Then, sitting down in that palanquin, he became intent.
Agastya, bearing the palanquin, then, enraged, cursed the king.
At the very utterance of the curse, the king fell by the Brahmin's power.
Just as Nahusha became thus, so too do all who are like him.
Therefore, by every effort, the wise, having attained a position, should guard it.
In the same way, Nahusha became a serpent in the fearful forest.
Likewise, all the gods were filled with astonishment in their hearts.
For this evil-minded one, neither the world of mortals nor heaven remained.
O great sage, let another, versed in sacrifice, be mentioned in the world.
Bring here, with haste, the highly fortunate Yayāti.
Then the great-souled Yayāti, mounting the celestial chariot, went to heaven, accompanied by the divine messengers.
