इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा स्मृतदेवाभवत्क्रमात्
Hearing his words, she gradually remembered the gods.
अहं बलवतो भार्या भविष्यामि तपश्चिरम्
I shall become the wife of the powerful one, after long austerity.
विरच स्त्रीस्वभावं स्वं श्रुत्वा तद्वाक्यमुत्थितम्
Viraca, hearing her own feminine nature expressed in those words,
जिघृक्षतं समायांतं वीक्ष्य तं महिषासुरम्
Saw Mahishasura approaching, intent on seizing her,
महामायां समालोक्य ज्वलंती पुरतः स्थिताम् 1.3.1.10.
Beheld the great Maya, blazing and standing before him,
कुलभूधरशृंगाणि शृंगाभ्यां मुहुराक्षिपन्
He repeatedly struck the peaks of the noble mountains with his horns,
अथ ब्रह्ममुखा देवाः प्रणम्य विविधायुधैः
Then the gods, led by Brahma, bowed and offered various weapons,
पंचहेतीर्हरिः प्रादाद्दश चापि सदाशिवः
Hari gave five weapons, and Sadashiva ten,
दिक्पालाश्च सुराश्चान्ये पर्वताश्च पयोधयः
The guardians of the directions, other gods, mountains, and oceans,
माया सा बहुभिर्हस्तैर्ज्वलदायुधसंचयैः
That Maya, with many hands, holding blazing collections of weapons,
आपूरितदिशाभोगा तेजस्तत्सोढुमक्षमः
Filled the expanse of the directions, her radiance impossible to withstand,
अथ तेजो निजं घोरं प्रज्वलत्सोढुमक्षमम्
Then her own fierce energy, blazing, could not be endured,
उपायेन निहंतव्यो दुष्टोऽयं महिषासुरः
By some means, this wicked Mahishasura must be slain,
दूतोक्तिभिः समाकृष्य मृद्वीभिर्मर्मवृत्तिभिः
By drawing him in with messenger's words, gentle and striking at the vital points,
अधर्मवृत्तियुक्तानां धर्मवाक्यपरिश्रवात् 1.3.1.10.
For those engaged in unrighteous conduct, hearing words of dharma,
अथवा धर्मबुद्धिस्सन्यदि शांतो भविष्यति
Or if the mind turns to dharma, then peace will arise,
तपस्यद्भिः सदा कार्यः कोपत्यागः फलान्वितः
For those engaged in austerity, renouncing anger is always fruitful,
इति संचिंत्य सा गौरी नाम्ना सुरगुरुं मुनिम्
Thinking thus, Gauri addressed the sage, the guru of the gods, by name,
गच्छ त्वं मायया युक्तो महर्षे वानरानन
Go, O great sage with the face of a monkey, endowed with Maya,
मैव त्वमरुणाद्रीशमुपपीडय दुर्मते
Do not, O misguided one, oppress the lord of the Aruna mountain.
न कलेरुपतापोऽत्र नासुरैरपि पीडनम्
Here, there is neither the distress of the Kali age nor oppression even by the Asuras.
पूर्वजन्मकृतैः पुण्यैर्लब्धवीर्यमहोदयः
By the merit of good deeds from previous births, you have attained great strength and prosperity.
शिवेन दत्ता विभवास्तव पूर्वतपोबलात्
The riches were given to you by Shiva, due to the power of your previous austerities.
अत्र धर्मात्मनां वासः शिवभक्तिमतां सदा
Here is always the dwelling of those devoted to righteousness and of the worshippers of Shiva.
ऐश्वर्य्यमतुलं प्राप्तो बलमन्यद्दुरासदम् 1.3.1.10.
You have attained incomparable sovereignty and another power that is difficult to overcome.
मया कन्या पुनर्दृष्टा विशेषादबला मता
The maiden has again been seen by me, and she is considered especially powerless.
अथवा युक्तिभेदैस्त्वं शास्त्रैर्वा शिवसंमतैः
Or else, by various arguments or by scriptures approved by Shiva, you—
येन लोकान्समस्तांस्त्वं बाधसे बलगर्वितः
—by which, proud of your strength, you trouble all the worlds.
आनीय सकलं सैन्यमग्रे स्थापय सायुधम्
Bring forth your entire army, fully armed, and place it at the front.
मच्छस्त्र परिकृत्तस्य ससैन्यस्य तवायुषः
When your life, along with your army, is cut down by my weapon—
