The gods, Indra and others, in that most terrible battle,
have heard all the glory of Shiva, which has come forth from your mouth.
When the gods were defeated by the demons, all of them took refuge in Shambhu.
Likewise, the demons, fighting with enthusiasm and great strength, all did the same.
Thus, all the asuras and the gods, struck down by spears, missiles, tridents, maces, and axes, at that time the asuras were felled by the gods with various supreme weapons.
They made the whole earth a mire of flesh and blood.
There were heads, headless trunks, and great armor.
Many rivers flowed, terrifying to the fearful, carrying away the bodies of ghosts, spirits, and rakshasas.
Hosts of Śākinīs and Ḍākinīs, and thousands of Yakṣiṇīs as well,
Thus, those Bhūtas, Pramathas, and Rākṣasas played together.
Indra, lord of the gods, of wondrous valor, fought with Bali.
Mahendra, swift in action, deceived that weapon.
With his sharp-edged thunderbolt, the mighty one severed Bali’s arm.
Seeing Bali fallen, Vṛṣaparvan, endowed with form,
Saw Mahendra, along with his elephant, enduring the sharp arrows.
Indra, destroyer of enemy hosts, struck down Vṛṣaparvan.
Then, with his great thunderbolt, he slew the Dānavas in battle.
Some were made to reel by Indra, who was enraged.
Others were slain by Kubera, and still others by Nairṛta.
Thus, at that time, those powerful and heroic great Asuras were slain by them.
Then, the foremost of the great Daityas, the wicked Kalānemi, equipped with supreme weapons,
Mounted on a lion, armed with a trident, and adorned with fangs,
All those lions, fierce and mighty in strength and valor, were fanged.
Seeing the entire Daitya army advancing, adorned with lions, they became filled with incomparable fear and turned to meditation.
"What shall we all do today? How shall we achieve this wondrous victory?"
As they were pondering thus, Nārada arrived there.
The ascetic power of Kālanemi was described to Mahendra.
Without Viṣṇu, we gods are powerless on the battlefield; he, dark as a tamāla tree and bestower of boons, is sought by all who desire victory.
Hearing Nārada’s words, the gods, filled with urgency, remembered the Supreme Soul and addressed him thus, the all-pervading Lord.
Salutations to you, O Blessed Lord; salutations to you, the auspiciousness of the universe.
