धन्विभिर्बलिभिर्वीरैर्मृगाः केचिदनुद्रुताः
Some animals were chased by warriors, strong and armed with bows.
अनुव्रजन्तो दितिजा मृगांस्तान्हंतुमुद्यताः
The sons of Diti followed, intent on slaying those animals.
किमत्रेति तदा पृष्टा बटुका दुष्टदानवैः
Then, when asked 'What is this?' by the wicked demon boys,
न केनचित्प्रवेष्टव्यं बलिना मुनिसेवितम्
No one, however strong, may enter here—this place is frequented by sages.
इति तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा बलिनो दुष्टदानवाः 1.3.1.10.
Having heard their words, the powerful and wicked Dānavas...
मायया पक्षिरूपास्ते प्रविश्याश्रममादरात्
By their magic, they assumed the forms of birds and respectfully entered the hermitage.
सा पुनर्ल्लसितारण्ये सर्वर्तुकुसुमान्विते
She again wandered in the forest, adorned with flowers of all seasons.
रूपलावण्यते तस्या निश्चयं तपसि स्थितम्
Her beauty and charm were firmly established in her austerity.
स स्मरार्तो वृद्धरूपः प्रविवेशाश्रमं तदा
Afflicted by desire, he took on the form of an old man and entered the hermitage at that time.
वृद्धोऽपृच्छत्किमर्थं तु तपोऽस्या इति तास्तथा
The old man asked, 'For what purpose is your austerity?' Thus did they inquire.
परं स बलवान्कांतो न कदापि प्रसीदति
He is supremely strong and handsome, yet never shows favor.
अपूर्वप्रभुणा तेन नवोपकरणं महत्
With unprecedented authority, he brought forth a new and great offering.
भाजनरपि साद्यस्कैर्न्यस्तः पक्वैश्च शालिभिः
The vessel was placed with fresh grains and cooked rice.
अपूर्वदृष्टविभवैः कार्यं स्यादुपकारणम्
With unseen riches, the work would be accomplished with assistance.
इति तासां वचः श्रुत्वा विहसन्महिषोऽभ्यधात् मदीया सकलां भूतिं शृणु बाले तपस्विनि ।। 1.3.1.10.
Hearing their words, the buffalo demon laughed and said: 'Listen, girl, ascetic, to all my wealth.'
महिषोऽहं महावीरो दैत्येन्द्रः सुरवंदितः
I am the buffalo, a great hero, lord of the Daityas, honored by the gods.
अनन्यवीरसद्भावो मय्येव भुजशुष्मणा
The existence of unmatched heroism is found only in me, by the strength of my arms.
भज मां तव भर्त्तारं प्राणिनां तपसः फलम्
Take me as your husband, the fruit of austerity for living beings.
सृजामि तपसा चाहं विश्वकर्माणमादितः
By austerity, I create the universal craftsman from the beginning.
नवभिर्निधिभिः प्राप्तैः पार्श्वस्थैर्नित्यदा मम
With nine treasures always obtained, and those by my side.
इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा स्मृतदेवाभवत्क्रमात्
Hearing his words, she gradually remembered the gods.
अहं बलवतो भार्या भविष्यामि तपश्चिरम्
I shall become the wife of the powerful one, after long austerity.
विरच स्त्रीस्वभावं स्वं श्रुत्वा तद्वाक्यमुत्थितम्
Viraca, hearing her own feminine nature expressed in those words,
जिघृक्षतं समायांतं वीक्ष्य तं महिषासुरम्
Saw Mahishasura approaching, intent on seizing her,
महामायां समालोक्य ज्वलंती पुरतः स्थिताम् 1.3.1.10.
Beheld the great Maya, blazing and standing before him,
कुलभूधरशृंगाणि शृंगाभ्यां मुहुराक्षिपन्
He repeatedly struck the peaks of the noble mountains with his horns,
अथ ब्रह्ममुखा देवाः प्रणम्य विविधायुधैः
Then the gods, led by Brahma, bowed and offered various weapons,
पंचहेतीर्हरिः प्रादाद्दश चापि सदाशिवः
Hari gave five weapons, and Sadashiva ten,
दिक्पालाश्च सुराश्चान्ये पर्वताश्च पयोधयः
The guardians of the directions, other gods, mountains, and oceans,
माया सा बहुभिर्हस्तैर्ज्वलदायुधसंचयैः
