Clad only in their own zeal, they churned the Ocean of Milk.
In the great conflagration threatening the three worlds, Kālakūṭa approached, intent on destroying the gods and consuming all beings.
Seeing the mighty serpent-king, held in his own hand along with the mountain, blazing with power—
In the same way, all the sages, beginning with Bhṛgu, numbering in the hundreds, also approached.
All have gone to the world of truth; the qualities of Bhrigu have not been greatly proclaimed. O gods, there is no doubt in this; truly, truly I tell you.
Hearing the words spoken by Bhrigu, afflicted by the poison of Kālakūṭa—
Then, as the blazing Kālakūṭa poison flared up, the lord prepared to curse them, but was restrained by Nārada.
O gods, what improper act has been done? For what reason has this agitation arisen?
Then, surrounded by the gods and likewise by the Vedas and Upaniṣads—
Thereafter, the gods, filled with anxiety, spoke these words to one another.
Then, placing Brahmā at their head, the gods, filled with urgency—
At that time, Brahmā and the hosts of seers approached the supreme lord Viṣṇu, the ancient person, the powerful lord.
Meanwhile, the greatly intensified Kālakūṭa poison approached.
Viṣṇu, who dwells in all secret places, was burned by the fire of Kālakūṭa.
Vaikuṇṭha and Sunīla, surrounded by all the worlds—
The cosmic egg, wrapped in eight coverings, along with Brahmā—
At that time, there was neither earth, nor water, nor fire, nor wind, nor sky; from the wrath of Śiva, the world then became filled with ashes.
O Brahman, what you have described—the cosmic egg with all that moves and does not move—
But within the cosmic egg, we consider Rudra to be supreme.
How did creation proceed, when everything was reduced to ashes by Rudra's wrath?
Where are the other gods and demons, who were reduced to ashes and dissolved?
By Vyāsa's grace, you know everything; indeed, there is no one else who knows thus.
Thus questioned at that time by all the sages whose minds were purified,
When the gods dwelling in the center of the cosmic egg were pervaded by the poison of the fire, then Śaṃbhu was informed by the great-souled Heramba.
O Rudra, O Mahādeva, O Sthāṇu, O Lord of the universe,
Out of fear and confusion of mind, they do not worship you nor me.
Thus entreated by him, Pinākī, the one bearing the bull as his emblem,
Śaṃbhu, in the form of the liṅga, spoke—formless, free from affliction.
Heramba, listen to my words, endowed with supreme faith.
Ego creates sustenance, as well as dissolution and origination.
