A great, circular, jewel-encrusted, and radiant mountain was there.
It was adorned with sandalwood, parijata, naga, punnaga, and campaka trees.
Seeing that great mountain, the foremost among the gods,
said, 'O mountain, we gods have all come here to make a request.'
Thus addressed by the gods and demons, that Mandara mountain replied.
Assuming that very form, the mountain Mandara appeared.
Then Bali spoke these words, appropriate to the occasion.
'Mandara mountain, join with us in this task.'
Thinking thus, and accepting their words for the accomplishment of the gods' purpose,
'Your wings were cut off by the thunderbolt with a hundred edges.'
Then all the gods and demons, praising the great mountain,
wished to carry it to the ocean of milk, but they were unable to do so.
Some were broken and died, some fell unconscious.
Thus, the gods, demons, and danavas became exhausted and discouraged.
'Protect, protect, O great Vishnu, who cherishes those who seek refuge!'
Then Hari appeared for the accomplishment of the gods' purpose.
Effortlessly, he lifted the best of mountains and set it in place in an instant.
Then, rising up, those gods went to the northern shore of the Milk Ocean.
At that time, all the hosts of gods, together with the asuras, assembled there.
They brought Mandara as the churning rod and Vāsuki as the rope.
As the Milk Ocean was being churned, the mountain was drawn down to the netherworld, but was immediately lifted up again—this appeared truly wondrous.
Though the mountain was being rotated, it did not sink, due to the effort of the gods and demons.
At that time, Viṣṇu, the Supreme Self, became the support of Mandara.
Then all the gods and asuras together churned the Ocean of Milk.
From the friction of the back, neck, thighs, and knees of the great-souled Tortoise, a submarine fire arose.
And the deadly poison Hālāhala was produced, which Nārada beheld.
Now, none of you should continue churning the ocean; let the act of Vīrabhadra, which you have forgotten, be recalled.
Therefore, quickly remember Śiva, O gods, who is supreme among the supreme, and beyond even the greatest.
Those gods, eager and intent on achieving their own purpose, continued churning.
Though instructed by many teachings, they could not be restrained at any time.
