अजेयत्वं च संग्रामे द्वैगुण्यं शिरसामपि ८.
He gained invincibility in battle and twice the number of heads.
देवानृषीन्पितॄंश्चैव निर्जित्य तपसा विभुः ८.
By his austerity, the mighty one conquered the gods, sages, and ancestors.
राजा त्रिकूटाधिपतिर्महेशेन कृतो महान् ८.
He became the great king, lord of Trikūṭa, established by Maheśa.
तपस्विनां परीक्षायै यदृषीणां विहिंसनम् ८.
The harm done to the sages was for the testing of ascetics.
अजेयो हि महाञ्जातो रावणो लोकरावणः ८.
Rāvaṇa, the terror of the worlds, became truly invincible and great.
लोकपाला जितास्तेन प्रतापेन तपस्विना ८.
By the power of his austerity, he conquered the guardians of the worlds.
अमृतांशुकरो भूत्वा जितो येन शशी द्विजाः ८.
Becoming radiant like nectar, he defeated the moon, O twice-born ones.
ऐश्वर्येण जितश्चेन्द्रो विष्णुः सर्वगतस्तथा ८.
By his sovereignty, he conquered Indra and also Viṣṇu, who pervades all.
तदा सर्वे सुरगणा ब्रह्मविष्णुपुरोगमाः ८.
Then all the hosts of gods, led by Brahmā and Viṣṇu,
पीडिताः स्मो रावणेन तपसा दुष्करेण वै ८.
Were afflicted by Rāvaṇa through his arduous austerity.
साक्षाल्लिंगार्चनं येन कृतमस्ति महात्मना तत्कृतं रावणेनैव सर्वेषां दुरतिक्रमम्॥ ८.
The great-souled one performed direct worship of the liṅga; that act by Rāvaṇa is insurmountable for all.
वैराग्यं परमास्थाय औदार्यं च ततोऽधिकम् ८.
He embraced supreme detachment and even greater generosity.
संवत्सरसहस्राच्च स्वशिरो हि महाभुजः ८.
After a thousand years, the mighty-armed one offered his own head.
रावणस्य कबंधं च तदग्रे च समीपतः ८.
The torso of Rāvaṇa was placed before and nearby.
लिंगे लयं समाधाय कयापि कलया स्थितम् कृतं नैवान्यमुनिना तथा चैवापरेणहि॥ ८.
Having established absorption in the liṅga by some method, none of the other sages accomplished this, nor did any other likewise.
एवं शिरांस्येव बहूनि तेन समर्पितान्येव शिवार्चनार्थे ८.
In this way, many heads were offered by him for the worship of Śiva.
मया विनासुरस्तत्र पिंडीभूतेन वै पुरा ८.
In ancient times, I was there, not as a demon, but in a compact form.
रावणेन तदा चोक्तः शिवः परममंगलः ८.
Then, Rāvaṇa spoke: 'Śiva is the supreme auspicious one.'
न कामयेऽन्यं च वरमाश्रये त्वत्पदांबुजम् ८.
I desire no other boon; I seek refuge in your lotus feet.
तदा सदाशिवेनोक्तो रावणो लोकरावणः ८.
Then, Sadāśiva spoke to Rāvaṇa, the terror of the worlds.
एवं प्राप्तं शिवात्सर्वं रावणेन सुरेश्वराः ८.
Thus, Rāvaṇa obtained everything from Śiva, O lords of the gods.
विजेतव्यो रावणोयमिति मे मनसि स्थितम् ८.
It is settled in my mind that Rāvaṇa must be conquered.
चिंतामापेदिरे सर्वे चिरं ते विषयान्विताः ८.
All of them fell into anxiety for a long time, being absorbed in their own concerns.
इंद्रो हि जारभावाच्च चंद्रो हि गुरुतल्पगः ८.
Indra, because of adultery, and the Moon, for approaching the guru’s wife.
पावकः सर्वभक्षित्वात्तथान्ये देवतागणाः ८.
Pāvaka, for consuming everything, and likewise other groups of deities.
शैलादो हि महातेजा गणश्रेष्ठः पुरातनः ८.
Śailāda, of great brilliance, ancient and foremost among the gaṇas.
शिवप्रियो रुद्ररूपी महात्मा ह्युवाच सर्वानथ चेंद्रमुख्यान् ८.
Beloved of Śiva, of Rudra’s form, the great soul spoke to all, including the chief among the gods.
नंदिना च तदा सर्वे पृष्टाः प्रोचुस्त्वरान्विताः॥ ८.
Then, all were questioned by Nandin, and they replied eagerly.
रावणेन वयं सर्वे निर्जिता मुनिभिः सह ८.
We have all been defeated by Rāvaṇa, along with the sages.
प्रहस्य भगवान्नंदी ब्रह्माणं वै ह्युवाच ह द्रष्टव्यो हृदि मध्यस्थः सोऽद्य द्रष्टुं न पार्यते॥ ८.
Laughing, the blessed Nandin spoke to Brahmā: 'He must be seen, dwelling in the heart’s center, but today he cannot be seen.'
