ये तार्किकास्तर्कपरास्तथ मीमांसकाश्च ये ८.
Those who are logicians, devoted to argument, and those who are Mīmāṃsakas—
एकवाक्यं न कुर्वंति शिवार्चनबहिष्कृताः ८.
They do not speak with one voice, being excluded from the worship of Śiva.
तथा किं बहुनोक्तेन सर्वेऽपि स्थिरजंगमाः ८.
So, why say much? All beings, both immobile and mobile—
पिण्डीयुक्तं यथा लिंगं स्थापितं च यथाऽभवत् ८.
Just as the liṅga is established with its pedestal, so it came to be.
शिवशक्तियुतं सर्वं जगदेतच्चराचरम् ८.
This entire world, moving and unmoving, is endowed with Śiva and Śakti.
धर्ममात्यंतिकं तुच्छं नश्वरं क्षणभंगुरम् ८.
Righteousness that is excessive is trivial, perishable, and fleeting.
पीठिका विष्णुरूपं स्याल्लिंगरूपी महेश्वरः ८.
The pedestal is of the form of Viṣṇu; Maheśvara is of the form of the liṅga.
ब्रह्मा मणिमयं लिंगं पूजयत्यनिशं शुभम् ८.
Brahmā worships the auspicious liṅga made of jewels, always.
भानुस्ताम्रमयं लिंगं पूजयत्यनिशं शुभम् ८.
The Sun always worships the auspicious liṅga made of copper.
यमो नीलमयं लिंगं राजतं नैर्ऋतस्तथा ८.
Yama worships the liṅga made of sapphire; likewise, Nairṛta worships one of silver.
एवं ते लिंगिताः सर्वे लोकपालाः सवासवाः ८.
Thus, all the guardians of the worlds, along with Indra, are devoted to the liṅga.
दैत्यानां वैष्णवाः केचित्प्रह्लादप्रमुखा द्विजाः ८.
Among the Daityas, some are Vaiṣṇavas, foremost being Prahlāda, O twice-born.
बलिश्च नमुचिश्चैव हिरण्यकशिपुस्तथा ८.
Bali, Namuci, and also Hiraṇyakaśipu—
एते चान्ये च बहवः शिष्याः शुक्रस्य धीमतः ८.
These and many other disciples of the wise Śukra—
राक्षसा एव ते सर्वे शिवपूजान्विताः सदा ८.
All these Rākṣasas are always endowed with the worship of Śiva.
विद्युज्जिह्वस्तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रो धूम्राक्षो भीमविक्रमः ८.
Vidyujjihva, with sharp fangs, Dhūmrākṣa, of terrible valor—
विद्युत्कैशस्तडिज्जिह्वो रावणश्च महाबलः ८.
Rāvaṇa, of immense strength, possessed a thunderous tongue like lightning.
एते हि राक्षसाः श्रेष्ठा शिवार्चनरताः सदा ८.
These are the foremost Rākṣasas, always devoted to the worship of Śiva.
रावणेन तपस्तप्तं सर्वेषामपि दुःखहम् ८.
Rāvaṇa performed austerities that dispelled the suffering of all.
वरान्प्रायच्छत तदा सर्वेषामपि दुर्लभान् ८.
At that time, he received boons that were difficult for anyone to obtain.
अजेयत्वं च संग्रामे द्वैगुण्यं शिरसामपि ८.
He gained invincibility in battle and twice the number of heads.
देवानृषीन्पितॄंश्चैव निर्जित्य तपसा विभुः ८.
By his austerity, the mighty one conquered the gods, sages, and ancestors.
राजा त्रिकूटाधिपतिर्महेशेन कृतो महान् ८.
He became the great king, lord of Trikūṭa, established by Maheśa.
तपस्विनां परीक्षायै यदृषीणां विहिंसनम् ८.
The harm done to the sages was for the testing of ascetics.
अजेयो हि महाञ्जातो रावणो लोकरावणः ८.
Rāvaṇa, the terror of the worlds, became truly invincible and great.
लोकपाला जितास्तेन प्रतापेन तपस्विना ८.
By the power of his austerity, he conquered the guardians of the worlds.
अमृतांशुकरो भूत्वा जितो येन शशी द्विजाः ८.
Becoming radiant like nectar, he defeated the moon, O twice-born ones.
ऐश्वर्येण जितश्चेन्द्रो विष्णुः सर्वगतस्तथा ८.
By his sovereignty, he conquered Indra and also Viṣṇu, who pervades all.
तदा सर्वे सुरगणा ब्रह्मविष्णुपुरोगमाः ८.
Then all the hosts of gods, led by Brahmā and Viṣṇu,
पीडिताः स्मो रावणेन तपसा दुष्करेण वै ८.
Were afflicted by Rāvaṇa through his arduous austerity.
