Hearing those words of the sage, he laughed and spoke as follows:
Engaged in the service of Shiva, led by devotion to Shiva,
Sweeping with my hands and feet, and going to the temple of Shiva,
I know nothing else except for sweeping.
What has she done before? Who is she? By whose grace? Filled with wonder, he then became silent.
Then, knowing this, Uddālaka, foremost among the wise, was amazed.
O Brahmin, once there was a thief, cast out from all religious duties.
He was a rogue, a great sinner, always lusting after the best women.
Once, while playing, he deceitfully won at gambling in a marvelous way.
Though tormented, he remained silent, addressed by those other great sinners.
Speak out quickly and truthfully, you wicked-minded one, or not at all.
Freed by those words, the gamblers departed.
Climbing upon the head of Shiva, he set out to take the bell.
What he did today surpassed all others on earth.
Having said this, he was seized by the hosts led by Virabhadra.
All three worlds resounded with the beating of drums; at once, he fled from the head of the linga.
Seeing him fleeing, Virabhadra called out to him.
Why do you tremble, fool? The great god, lord of gods, is here.
Having said this, he placed him in the aerial chariot and went to Kailāsa.
Therefore, devotion to Śiva should exist in all embodied beings.
Those who are logicians, devoted to argument, and those who are Mīmāṃsakas—
They do not speak with one voice, being excluded from the worship of Śiva.
So, why say much? All beings, both immobile and mobile—
Just as the liṅga is established with its pedestal, so it came to be.
This entire world, moving and unmoving, is endowed with Śiva and Śakti.
Righteousness that is excessive is trivial, perishable, and fleeting.
The pedestal is of the form of Viṣṇu; Maheśvara is of the form of the liṅga.
Brahmā worships the auspicious liṅga made of jewels, always.
The Sun always worships the auspicious liṅga made of copper.
Yama worships the liṅga made of sapphire; likewise, Nairṛta worships one of silver.
