क्षणात्तस्य पुरोभागे वसतां प्राणिनामिह
In an instant, before him, as living beings dwelled here,
अप्रमेयगुणाधारमपेक्षितवरप्रदम्
He is the support of immeasurable virtues, the giver of desired boons to those who seek him.
लब्धकामा पुनः शम्भुमाश्रयिष्यसि सुव्रते 1.3.1.9.
Having attained your wish, O virtuous one, you will again take refuge in Śambhu.
न केवलं तव तपः स्ववांछितफलप्रदम्
Not only does your austerity grant the fruit you desire,
कारणांतरमाशंक्य तपः कुर्वंति देवताः
But the gods also perform austerities, suspecting some other reason.
वयं च सहसंवासास्तव व्रतनिरीक्षणात्
And we too, dwelling together with you, observing your vow,
इति तस्य मुनेर्वाक्यमर्थगर्भं निशम्य सा
Thus, hearing the sage’s words, full of meaning, she
तपः किमन्यत्कर्तव्यं लब्धं तव तु दर्शनम्
What other austerity should be done, now that your vision has been gained?
अहो भूमेस्तु वैचित्र्यं यतो दृष्टा दिवोऽधिका
Oh, the wonder of the earth, for by it, sights greater than heaven have been seen.
शिवः प्रसादसिद्धो मे दर्शितं स्थानमात्मनः
By Śiva’s grace, my wish is fulfilled; the place of my own self has been revealed.
अविनाभूतमैक्यं मे देवेन भवतात्सदा
May my unity with the god always remain inseparable.
इति गौतमसंनिधौ तदानीं कृतसंवित्तप आदरेण कर्तुम्
Thus, in the presence of Gautama, then, with awareness arisen, she prepared to act with reverence.
सुकुमारतनुः सरोरुहाक्षी घनतुंगस्तनकल्पितोत्तरीया 1.3.1.9.
Her body delicate, eyes like lotuses, her upper garment fashioned by her full, high breasts,
नियमैर्बहुभिस्तपोविशेषैः क्रतुषु प्राप्तविचित्रयोगबंधैः
With many disciplines, special austerities, and sacrifices, she attained wondrous states of yogic union.
तपसा विविधेनतप्यमाना न कदाचित्परिखेदमाप तन्वी
Though engaged in various austerities, the slender one never experienced fatigue.
नत्वा गौरीं तपस्यंतीं जग्मुः शरणमाकुलाः
Bowing to Gaurī as she performed austerities, they, distressed, sought her refuge.
अथ तानभयं देहि देवीति भयविह्वलान्
Then they, overcome by fear, said: 'O goddess, grant us freedom from fear!'
ततो विज्ञापयामासुर्दैत्येंद्राद्भयमात्मनाम्
Then they informed her that their fear was caused by the lord of the demons.
ऐरावतमुखान्सर्वान्दिङ्नागान्निजमंदिरे
He brought all the directional elephants, headed by Airavata, into his own palace.
आवसयन्विनोदार्थमंगनाभिः सहागतान्
He housed them there for his amusement, accompanied by women.
मंदुरास्वस्य रम्यासु दृश्यंते लक्षकोटयः
In the splendid stables of his horses, hundreds of thousands can be seen.
याम्यं महिषमानीय शकटे सोऽभ्यवाहयत्
He brought the buffalo of Yama and made it pull a cart.
अप्सरःसंघमखिलमात्मसेवार्थमानयत्
He summoned the entire host of Apsarases for his own service.
अनाहृतं पुनर्हर्तुं न विश्राम्यति कोपवान्
Angry, he does not rest until he has taken back what was not given to him.
पूजयंतश्च तस्याज्ञां नान्यां वीक्षामहे गतिम् 1.3.1.10.
Honoring his command, we see no other path.
दुर्जयोऽयं वरो दैत्यः सर्वेषां बलिनामपि
This Daitya is an unconquerable hero, even among all the mighty.
अस्य शृंगाहतः सिंधुर्व्यावर्जितमिति ब्रुवन्
They say that the ocean was split by the blow of his horn.
पर्वतांश्च समुत्क्षिप्य शृंगाग्रेण महोद्धतः
Arrogant, he lifts up mountains with the tip of his horn.
न शक्यमतुलं तस्य बलमन्यदुरासदम्
His incomparable strength cannot be withstood by anyone else.
शंभुशक्तिः परा सेयं स्त्रीरूपेणात्र दृश्यते
This supreme power of Shiva is now seen here in the form of a woman.
