आयातो हि महाकालस्तथारूपो महाबलः ५.
For indeed, the great Kāla has arrived, in such a form, mighty in strength.
तं दृष्ट्वा भयवित्रस्तो नन्दी स विललाप ह ५.
Seeing him, Nandī, terrified and overwhelmed by fear, lamented.
किरातेन कृतं तत्र यथापूर्वमविस्खलम् ५.
There, the Kirāta performed the rites just as before, without error.
स्नपनं तस्य कृत्वा च ततो गंडूषवारिणा ५.
Having performed his ablution, he then used water for rinsing the mouth.
दण्डवत्पतितो भूमावुत्थाय स्वगृहं गतः ५.
Falling prostrate on the ground like a staff, he rose and went to his own house.
पुरोधसा सह तदा नंदीव्याकुलचेतसा ५.
Then, together with the priest, Nandī, his mind troubled,
निवेद्य तेषु तत्सर्वं किरातेन च यत्कृतम् ५.
Reported all that had been done there by the Kirāta.
संप्रधार्य ततः सर्वे मिलित्वा धर्मशास्त्रतः ५.
Then, after deliberating together, all assembled according to the law of righteousness.
इदं विघ्नं समुत्पन्नं दुर्निवार्यं सुरैरपि ५.
This obstacle has arisen, difficult to overcome even for the gods.
तथेति मत्वासौ नंदी शिवस्योत्पाटनं तदा ५.
Thus thinking, Nandī then undertook the uprooting of Śiva.
सुवर्णपीठिकां कृत्वा नवरत्नसुशोभिताम् ५.
He made a golden pedestal, adorned with nine precious gems.
अथापरे द्युरायातः किरातः शिवमंदिरम् ५.
Then, on another day, the Kirāta arrived at the temple of Śiva.
मौनं विहाय सहसा ह्याक्रोशन्निदमब्रवीत् ५.
Abandoning silence, he suddenly cried out and spoke these words:
न दृष्टोसि मया त्वं हि त्यजाम्यद्य कलेवरम् ५.
I have not seen you; today I will abandon this body.
हे रुद्र हे महादेव दर्शयात्मानमात्मना॥ ५.
O Rudra, O Great God, reveal yourself by your own Self!
एवं साक्षेपमधुरैर्वाक्यैः क्षिप्तः सदाशिवः ५.
Thus, with such sharp yet sweet words, Sadāśiva was provoked.
विभेदाशु ततो बाहूनास्फोट्यैव रुषाब्रवीत् ५.
Then, quickly breaking his arms, he struck them in anger and spoke.
इति क्षिप्त्वा ततोंत्राणि मांसमुत्कृत्य सर्वतः ५.
Thus, after casting off the tendons, he tore the flesh from all sides.
स्वस्थं च हृदयं कृत्वा सस्नौ तत्सरसि ध्रुवम् ५.
Composing his heart and mind, he bathed in that sacred lake.
पूजयित्वा यथान्यायं दंडवत्पतितो भुवि॥ ५.
Having worshipped according to proper rite, he prostrated himself flat upon the ground.
ध्यानस्थितस्ततस्तत्र किरातः शिवसंनिधौ ५.
Then, absorbed in meditation, the Kirāta remained there in the presence of Shiva.
कर्पूरगौरो द्युतिमान्कपर्दी चंद्रशेखरः ५.
He beheld one radiant as camphor, shining, with matted locks and the crescent moon as his crest.
भोभो वीर महाप्राज्ञ मद्भक्तोसि महामते ५.
"O hero, greatly wise one, you are my devotee, O most intelligent!"
एवमुक्तः स रुद्रेण महाकालो मुदान्वितः ५.
Thus addressed by Rudra, the Kirāta, filled with joy, became Mahākāla.
ततो रुद्रं बभाषे स वरं सम्प्रार्थयाम्यहम् ५.
Then he spoke to Rudra: "I seek a boon from you."
एतद्बुद्धात्मनो भक्तिं देहि जन्मनिजन्मनि ५.
"Grant me devotion to you, who are of awakened mind, in every birth."
त्वं गुरुस्त्वं महामंत्रो मंत्रवेद्योऽसि सर्वदा ५.
"You are the Guru, you are the great Mantra, you are always to be known through mantra."
निष्कामं वाक्यमाकर्ण्य किरातस्य तदा भवः ५.
Hearing the Kirāta's selfless words, Bhava was pleased.
तदा डमरुनादेन नादितं भुवनत्रयम् ५.
Then, by the sound of the ḍamaru drum, the three worlds resounded.
तदा दुंदुभयो नेदुः पटहाश्च सहस्रशः ५.
At that moment, thousands of kettledrums and drums thundered.
