Daksha was slain by his own action, O Brahman, there is no doubt.
One should never perform actions that bring suffering to others.
Having spoken thus, Rudra, together with Brahma and the gods, at that time—
Rudra then saw what had been done by Virabhadra.
Then all the other sages and the fathers likewise—
Were wounded, shorn, and some lay dead on the battlefield.
Seeing Shambhu arrive, Virabhadra, together with the hosts, approached.
Seeing Virabhadra, of great strength, standing before him, Rudra—
Bring Daksha here quickly, O you by whom this has been done.
Thus addressed by Shankara, Virabhadra, filled with urgency—
Thus commanded by Shankara, Virabhadra, of great resolve—
I will now grant life even to the crooked one, O hero.
O Śaṅkara, at that very moment, I offered my head into the fire.
Knowing this, Rudra then cast it upon the headless trunk.
By the grace of Śaṅkara, Dakṣa regained his life; becoming humble, he praised Śaṅkara, the benefactor of the worlds.
I bow to the god who grants boons, who is most excellent; I bow to the eternal Lord of the gods.
I bow to the Lord of the universe, of universal form, eternal, the very Brahman, whose true form is the self.
Praised by Dakṣa, Rudra spoke privately, smiling.
Four kinds of virtuous people always worship me.
Therefore, all those who possess knowledge are dear to me—of this there is no doubt.
You wish to cross over worldly existence by action alone.
Not by the Vedas, nor by gifts, nor by sacrifices, nor by austerity at any time—
Therefore, being devoted to knowledge, perform action with concentration.
Then, instructed by Śambhu, the supreme lord,
So too by Brahmā, and all the great sages beginning with Bhṛgu.
Then the grandsire Brahmā returned to his own abode.
Dakṣa himself, by those words, attained supreme understanding; devoted to meditation on Śiva, the great-minded one performed austerities.
Therefore, with all effort, the blessed Śiva should be worshipped.
Those men who sweep the courtyard of Śiva—
Those who offer a brilliantly shining mirror to Śiva—
