तथेत्युक्त्वा तु वीरोऽसौ वीरभद्रो महाबलः ४.
Saying 'so be it,' that heroic and mighty Vīrabhadra—
विष्णुश्चापि महाघोषं शंखनादं चकार सः ४.
Viṣṇu then made a great sound by blowing his conch.
व्यूहं चक्रुस्तदा सर्वे लोकपालाः सवासवाः ४.
At that time, all the guardians of the worlds, along with Indra, formed their battle array.
नंदीना च हतः शक्रस्त्रिशूलेन स्तनांतरे ४.
Indra was struck down by Nandī with a trident in the chest.
शूलेन सितधारेण संनद्धो दण्डधारिणा ४.
He was pierced by a sharp trident, wielded by one bearing a staff.
कुबेरेण च संगम्य कूष्मांडानां पतिः स्वयम् ४.
And joining with Kubera, the lord of the Kūṣmāṇḍas himself—
युयुधे परयाशक्त्या त्रैलोक्यं विस्मयन्निव ४.
He fought with supreme power, as if astonishing the three worlds.
युयुधे परमास्त्रेण नैर्ऋत्यं च विडंबयन् ४.
He fought with the ultimate weapon, mocking the region of Nairṛti.
विदार्य देवानखिलान्पपौ शोणितमद्बुतम् ४.
Having torn apart all the gods, he drank their wondrous blood.
साकिनी डाकिनी रौद्रा नवदुर्गास्तथैव च नेदुः पपुः शोणितं च बुभुजुः पिशितं बहु॥ ४.
The Sākinīs, Dākinīs, the fierce ones, and the Nine Durgās likewise, shouted, drank the blood, and devoured much flesh.
भक्ष्यमाणं तदा सैन्यं विलोक्य सुरराट्स्वयम् ४.
Seeing his army being devoured at that time, the king of the gods himself—
वीरभद्रो विहायैव विष्णुं देवेन्द्रमास्थितः ४.
Vīrabhadra, leaving Viṣṇu aside, went straight for Indra, the lord of the gods.
वीरभद्रं यदा शक्रो हंतुकामस्त्वरान्वितः ४.
When Śakra, filled with urgency, sought to slay Vīrabhadra—
वीरभद्रो रुषाविष्टो दुर्निवार्यो महाबलः ४.
Vīrabhadra, seized by wrath, unstoppable and of great might—
सगजं च सवज्रं च वासवं ग्रस्तुमुद्युतः ४.
Prepared to swallow Vāsava together with his elephant and thunderbolt—
वीरभद्रं तताभूतं तथाभूतं हंतुकामं पुरंदरम् ४.
Vīrabhadra, in such a state, desiring to slay Purandara—
शक्रं च पृष्ठतः कृत्वा योधयामास वै तदा ४.
Then, placing Śakra behind him, he began to fight.
शस्त्रास्त्रैर्विविधाकारैर्योधयामासतुस्तदा ४.
They fought then with various kinds of weapons and missiles.
द्वंद्वयुद्धं सुतुमुलं देवानां प्रमथैः सह ४.
A most tumultuous duel took place between the gods and the Pramathas.
गणान्पराङ्मुखान्दृष्ट्वा सर्वे ते व्याधयो भृशम् ४.
Seeing all the Gaṇas turning their backs, all those diseases pressed hard.
ज्वरैस्तु पीडितान्देवान्दृष्ट्वा विष्णुर्हसन्निव ४.
Seeing the gods afflicted by fevers, Viṣṇu laughed, as if in amusement.
देवाश्चिनौ तदाहूय व्याधीन्हंतुं तदा भृतिम् ४.
Then the gods summoned the physicians to destroy those diseases at once.
ज्वरांश्च सन्निपातांश्च अन्ये भूतद्रुहस्तदा विज्वरानथ देवांश्च कृत्वा मुमुदतुश्चिरम्॥ ४.
Those who were enemies of beings then removed the fevers and other disorders, and made the gods free from illness, so that they rejoiced for a long time.
तैर्जितं योगिनीचक्रं भैरवं व्याकुलीकृतम् ४.
By them, the circle of Yoginīs was subdued, and Bhairava thrown into confusion.
सुरैर्विद्रावितं सैन्यं विलोक्य पतितं भुवि ४.
Seeing the army, routed by the gods, fallen upon the earth—
त्वं शूरोसि महाबाहो देवानां पालको ह्यसि ४.
You are a hero, mighty-armed one; indeed, you are the protector of the gods.
इत्युक्त्वा तं समासाद्य विष्णुं सर्वेश्वरेश्वरम् ४.
Having spoken thus, he approached Viṣṇu, the Lord of all lords.
तदा चक्रेण भगवान्वीरभद्रं जघान सः ४.
Then the Blessed Lord struck Vīrabhadra with the discus.
ग्रसितं चक्रमालोक्य विष्णुः परपुरंजयः ४.
Seeing the discus swallowed up, Viṣṇu, conqueror of enemy cities,
स्वचक्रमादाय महानुभावो दिवं गतोऽथो भुवनैकभर्ता ४.
Retrieved his own discus, that mighty one, and ascended to heaven, the sole ruler of the worlds.
