भूषणानि महार्हाणि तेभ्यो देव्यै परंतपः २.
The great ascetic gave the goddess ornaments of immense value.
देव्या गतं वै स्वपितुर्गृहं तदा विमृश्य सर्वं भगवान्महेशः २.
When the goddess had gone to her father's house, the blessed Mahesha considered everything.
दाक्षायणी गता तत्र यत्र यज्ञो महानभूत् ३.
Dakshayani went there, where the great sacrifice was taking place.
द्वारि स्थिता तदा देवा अवतीर्य निजासनात् ३.
Then, as she stood at the door, the gods descended from their own seats.
मातरं पितरं दृष्ट्वा सुहृत्संबंधि वांधवान् ३.
Seeing her mother, father, friends, relatives, and kin—
बभाषे वचनं देवी प्रस्तापसदृशं तदा ३.
The goddess then spoke words befitting her distress.
येन पूतमिदं सर्वं समग्रं सचराचरम् ३.
By whom this entire universe, with all that moves and does not move, has been purified—
द्रव्यं मंत्रादिकं सर्वं हव्यं कव्यं च यन्मयम् ३.
All the substances, mantras, and everything offered, both to the gods and to the ancestors, are composed of him.
शंभुना हि विना तात कथं यज्ञः प्रवर्तते ३.
O father, how can the sacrifice proceed without Shambhu?
हे भृगो त्वं न जानासि हे कश्यप महामते ३.
O Bhrigu, you do not know; O Kashyapa, wise one—
हे विष्णो त्वं महादेवं जानासि परमेश्वरम् ३.
O Vishnu, you know Mahadeva, the Supreme Lord.
पुरा पंचमुखो भूत्वा गर्वितोसि सदाशिवम् ३.
Once, becoming five-faced, you were proud before Sadashiva.
भिक्षाटनं कृतं येन पुरा दारुवने विभुः ३.
It was he who once performed the act of begging for alms in the Daru forest, the Lord.
शप्तेनापि च रुद्रेण भवद्भिर्विस्मृतं कथम् ३.
Even though Rudra cursed him, how have you all forgotten this?
लिंगभूतं जगत्सर्वं जातं तत्क्षणमेव हि ३.
At that very moment, the entire universe became manifest in the form of the liṅga.
सर्वे देवाश्च संभूता यतो देवस्य शूलिनः ३.
All the gods were born from that god, the wielder of the trident.
तस्या वचनमाकर्ण्य दक्षः क्रुद्धोऽब्रवीद्वचः ३.
Hearing her words, Daksha, enraged, spoke these words:
गच्छ वा तिष्ठवा भद्रे कस्मात्त्वं हि समागता ३.
Go or stay, O good lady; why have you come here?
अकुलीनो वेदबाह्यो भूतप्रेतपिशाचराट् ३.
He is of no lineage, outside the Vedas, lord of spirits, ghosts, and fiends.
मया दत्तासि सुश्रोणि पापिना मंदबुद्धिना ३.
By me, O slender-waisted one, you were given to him, a sinner of dull mind.
तस्मात्कायं परित्यज्य स्वस्था भव शुचिस्मिते ३.
Therefore, abandon this body and be at peace, O fair-smiling one.
निंदायुक्तं स्वपितरं विलोक्य रुषिता भृशम् ३.
Seeing her father, full of reproach, she became deeply angry.
शंकरं द्रष्टुकामांह किं वक्ष्ये तेन पृच्छिता तावुभौ नरके यातो यावच्चन्द्रदिवाकरौ॥ ३.
Desiring to see Shankara, she said, 'What shall I say if he asks? Both of you will go to hell as long as the moon and sun endure.'
तस्मात्तयक्ष्याम्यहं देहं प्रवेक्ष्यामि हुताशनम्॥ ३.
Therefore, I shall sacrifice this body and enter the fire.
एवं मीमांसमाना सा शिवरुद्रेतिभाषिणी ३.
Thus, as she resolved, speaking the names Shiva and Rudra,
हाहाकारेण महता व्याप्तमासीद्दिगंतरम् ३.
A great clamor of lamentation filled all directions.
शस्त्रैः स्वैर्जध्नुरात्मानं स्वानि देहानि चिच्छिदुः ३.
With their own weapons, they struck themselves and cut their own bodies.
नीराजयंतस्त्वरिता भस्मीभूताश्च जज्ञिरे ३.
Hastening to perform the rites, they became ashes.
शस्त्रप्राहारैः स्वांगानि चिच्छिदुश्चातिभीषणाः ३.
With terrifying blows of weapons, they cut their own limbs.
गणास्तत्रायूते द्वे च तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ३.
There, two hosts of attendants appeared; it was as if a wonder occurred.
