अथ तं वीक्ष्य स मुनिः सनारुरुपजंघनिम्
Then the sage Sanāru, seeing Upajaṃghani,
प्राणितव्येऽत्र को हेतुर्मच्छिशोरुपजंघनेः
wondered, 'What is the reason for preserving the life of my disciple Upajaṃghani here?
इति यावत्स संधत्ते धियं तज्जीवितैकिकाम् 4.2.94.
Thus, as he pondered with a mind intent on saving his life,
आनिनाय च तत्रैव सोप्य नन्निर्गतस्ततः
he brought him there, but he did not recover.
मृदु हस्ततलेनैव यावत्खनति वै मुनिः
With his gentle palm, the sage dug into the earth.
सनारुणाथ तल्लिंगं तेन तत्र समर्चितम्
With a sprout, that liṅga was worshipped there.
अमृतेश्वरनामेदं लिंगमानंदकानने
This liṅga in Ānandaka forest is called Amṛteśvara.
अमृतेशं समभ्यर्च्य जीवत्पुत्रः स वै मुनिः
Having worshipped Amṛteśa, the sage received his son alive.
तदाप्रभृति तल्लिंगममृतेशं मुनीश्वर
From that time onward, O lord of sages, that liṅga is known as Amṛteśa.
अमृतेश्वर संस्पर्शान्मृता जीवंति तत्क्षणात्
By the touch of Amṛteśvara, the dead come to life instantly.
अमृतेश समं लिंगं नास्ति क्वापि महीतले
There is no liṅga equal to Amṛteśa anywhere on earth.
अमृतेश्वर नामापि ये काश्यां परिगृह्णते
Even those who merely accept the name Amṛteśvara in Kāśī,
मुनेऽन्यच्च महालिंगं करुणेश्वरसंज्ञितम् 4.2.94.
O sage, there is another great liṅga called Karuṇeśvara.
दर्शनात्तस्य लिंगस्य महाकारुणिकस्य वै
By seeing that liṅga of the great compassionate one,
स्नातव्यं मणिकर्ण्यां च द्रष्टव्यः करुणेश्वरः
One should bathe at Maṇikarṇikā and behold Karuṇeśvara.
सोमवासरमासाद्य एकभक्तव्रतं चरेत्
On reaching the day of the moon, one should observe the vow of a single meal.
तेन व्रतेन संतुष्टः करुणेशः कदाचन
When satisfied by that vow, Karuṇeśa at some time,
तत्पत्रैस्तत्फलैर्वापि संपूज्यः करुणेश्वरः
Karuneśvara should be worshipped with those leaves or fruits.
तेनार्च्यः करुणावृक्षो देवेशः प्रीयतामिति
By worshipping, the tree of compassion, lord of gods, may be pleased.
प्रसन्नः करुणेशोत्र तस्य दास्यति वांछितम्
When Karuṇeśa is pleased here, he will grant the desired boon.
इति ते करुणेशस्य महिमोक्तो महत्तरः
Thus, the greatness of Karuṇeśa has been declared to you, most exalted.
मोक्षद्वारेश्वरं चैव स्वर्गद्वोरेश्वरं तथा
And also Mokṣadvāreśvara, lord at the gate of liberation, and Svargadvāreśvara, lord at the gate of heaven.
ज्योतीरूपेश्वरं लिंगं काश्यामन्यत्प्रकाशते 4.2.94.
In Kāśī, another linga shines forth as the Lord in the form of light.
चक्रपुष्करिणी तीरे ज्योतीरूपेश्वरं परम्
On the bank of the Cakrapuṣkariṇī, the supreme Lord in the form of light appears.
यदा भागीरथी गंगा तत्र प्राप्ता सरिद्वरा
When the Bhāgīrathī Gaṅgā, the foremost river, arrived there,
पुरा विष्णौ तपत्यत्र तल्लिंगं स्वयमेव हि
Long ago, as Viṣṇu was performing austerities there, that linga manifested by itself.
चक्रपुष्करिणी तीरे ज्योतीरूपेश्वरं तदा
Then, on the bank of the Cakrapuṣkariṇī, the Lord in the form of light appeared.
एतेष्वपि च लिंगेषु चतुर्दशसु सत्तम
Among these fourteen lingas as well, O noble one,
ओंकारादीनि लिंगानि यान्युक्तानि चतुर्दश
The fourteen lingas beginning with Oṃkāra have been mentioned.
षदत्रिंशत्तत्त्वरूपोसौ लिगेष्वेषु सदाशिवः
Sadāśiva exists in the lingas as the embodiment of thirty-six principles.
