ददर्श शार्ङ्गिणं चाग्रे स्वगणैश्च परिष्टुतम्

He saw the wielder of Sharnga ahead, praised by his own hosts.

SkP 8.89.63

चक्रिभिर्गदिभिर्जुष्टं खड्गिभिश्चापि शार्ङ्गिभिः

Adorned with those bearing discus and mace, and also with sword-bearers and archers.

SkP 8.89.64

त्वं तु यज्ञपुमानत्र महायज्ञप्रवर्तकः

You are indeed the sacrificer here, the initiator of the great sacrifice.

SkP 8.89.65

किं वा दक्षं समानीय देहि युध्यस्व वा मया

Either bring Daksha here, or fight with me.

SkP 8.89.66

प्रायशः शंभुभक्तेषु यतस्त्वं प्रोच्यसेऽग्रणीः

For among the devotees of Shambhu, you are proclaimed foremost.

SkP 8.89.67

तुष्टेन शंभुना दत्तं तुभ्यं चक्रं सुदर्शनम्

The Sudarshana discus was given to you by the pleased Shambhu.

SkP 8.89.68

इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य वीरभद्रस्य चोर्जितम्

Hearing those powerful words of Virabhadra—

त्वं शंभोः सुत देशीयो गणानां प्रवरोस्यहो

You, O son of Shambhu, are indeed the chief among the hosts—how wondrous!

SkP 8.89.70

योसि सोस्यहमप्यत्र दक्षरक्षणदक्षधीः 4.2.89.

You are he, and I am also here, wise in protecting Daksha.

SkP 8.89.71

इत्युक्तो वीरभद्रः स तेन वै शार्ङ्गधन्वना

Thus addressed by the wielder of Sharnga, Virabhadra—

SkP 8.89.72

अथ तैः प्रमथैर्विष्णोरनुगा गदिता रणे

Then, in battle, those Pramathas followed Vishnu, speaking—

ततस्तार्क्ष्यरथः क्रुद्धस्त्वेकैकं रणमूर्धनि

Then, the chariot of Tarkshya, enraged, engaged each one at the forefront of battle.

ते भिन्नवक्षसः सर्वे गणा रुधिरवर्षिणः

All those hosts, their chests split open, rained blood.

SkP 8.89.75

क्षरंत इव मातंगाः स्रवंत इव पर्वताः

They flowed like elephants wounded, or like mountains oozing.

SkP 8.89.76

ततः प्रहस्य गणपोऽब्रवीद्वै कुंठनायकम्

Then, laughing, the Lord of the Hosts spoke to Kuṇṭhanāyaka:

परं युध्यसि दैत्येंद्रैर्दानवेंद्रैर्न पार्षदैः

You fight fiercely with the lords of Daityas and Dānavas, not with attendants.

SkP 8.89.78

गदिनाऽथ गदा तूर्णं दैत्येंद्रगिरिरेणुकृत्

Then the club, hurled swiftly by the club-bearer, struck the mountain-like lord of Daityas.

तदंगसंगमासाद्य विदद्रे शतधा तया

Striking his body, it shattered him into a hundred pieces.

SkP 8.89.80

जघान वासुदेवोपि तरसाऽज्ञातवेदनम् 4.2.89.

Vāsudeva too struck with force, not knowing his opponent.

SkP 8.89.81

आताड्य सव्यदोर्दंडे गदां भूमावपातयत्

Struck on his left arm, he dropped his club to the ground.

स च चक्रं समागच्छद्दृष्ट्वा सस्मार शंकरम् कंठमासाद्यवीरस्य सम्यग्जातं सुदर्शनम्

Then, seeing the discus approach, he remembered Śaṅkara; the Sudarśana, well-formed, appeared at the hero’s throat.

तेन चक्रेण शुशुभे नितरां स गणेश्वरः

With that discus, the Lord of Hosts shone exceedingly.

SkP 8.89.84

ततः सुदर्शनं दृष्ट्वा तत्कंठाभरणं हरिः

Then, seeing Sudarśana as the ornament at his throat, Hari—

सनंदकं करं तस्य प्रोद्यतं मधुविद्विषः

—the foe of Madhu, raised his hand, holding the Sanandaka weapon.

SkP 8.89.86

अभ्यधावच्च वेगेन गृहीत्वा शूलमुज्ज्वलम्

He rushed forward with speed, seizing a blazing spear.

SkP 8.89.87

वारितो गणराजः स मा कार्षीः साहसं त्विति

The Lord of Hosts was restrained: 'Do not commit this rash act.'

SkP 8.89.88

प्राप्य दक्षं विनद्योच्चैर्धिक्त्वामीश्वरनिंदकम् स कथं सेश्वरं कर्म न कुर्याद्दक्षतांदधत्

Reaching Dakṣa, he roared loudly, 'Shame on you, blasphemer of the Lord! How can one who bears the name of Dakṣa act against the Lord, while claiming skill?

SkP 8.89.89

येनास्येन पवित्रेण भवता निंदितः शिवः

By your pure mouth, you have reviled Śiva.

SkP 8.89.90

इत्युक्त्वा तस्य दक्षस्य हरपारुष्यभाषिणः ।। 4.2.89.

Having spoken thus to Dakṣa, who uttered harsh words against Hara—

ततस्त्वदितिमुख्यानां मिलितानां महोत्सवे

Then, as the great festival was joined by you and the foremost of the gods—
