कुरु मे सत्वरं कार्यं दक्षयज्ञं क्षयं नय
Quickly accomplish my task: bring the destruction of Daksha's sacrifice.
ते त्वयाप्यवमंतव्या व्रज पुत्र शुभोदय
Those must also be disregarded by you; go, son, to auspicious dawn.
हरं प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य जग्मिवानतिरंहसा
Circumambulating Hara, he departed with great speed.
शतकोटिमितानुग्रान्गणानन्न्यानवासृजत्
He created other hosts, numbering hundreds of millions.
केचित्तदनुगा जाताः केचित्तत्पार्श्वगा ययुः
Some became his followers, others went to his side.
शृंगाग्राणि गिरीणां च कैश्चिदुत्पाटितानि वै
Some tore off the mountain peaks with their horns.
उत्पाट्य महतो वृक्षान्केचित्प्राप्ता मखांगणम्
Some, having uprooted great trees, reached the sacrificial ground.
मंडपं ध्वंसयामासुः केचित्क्रोधोद्धुरागणाः अभक्षयन्हवींष्यन्ये पृषदाज्यं पपुः परे
Some fierce bands, driven by wrath, began to destroy the pavilion; others devoured the oblations, while some drank the clarified butter.
दध्वंसुरन्नराशींश्च केचित्पर्वतसन्निभान्
Some set fire to heaps of men, massive as mountains.
केचित्पक्वान्नपुष्टांगा यज्ञपात्राण्यचूर्णयन् 4.2.89.४० व्यभजञ्छकटान्केचित्पशून्केचिदजीगिलन्
Some, their bodies nourished by cooked food, crushed the sacrificial vessels; some divided the carts, while others swallowed the animals.
स्वयं परिदधुश्चान्ये दुकूलानि मुदा युताः
Others, delighted, themselves put on fine garments.
एकेन च भगो देवः पश्यंश्चक्रे विलोचनः
And the god Bhaga, with a single eye, looked on.
यज्ञः पलायितो दृष्टः केनचिन्मृगरूपधृक्
Someone saw Yajña fleeing, having taken the form of a deer.
एकः सरस्वतीं यांतीं दृष्ट्वा निर्नासिकां व्यधात्
One, seeing Sarasvatī departing, made her without a nose.
अर्यम्णो बाहुयुगलं तथोत्पाटितवान्परः
Another tore out the pair of arms of Aryaman.
चिच्छेद वायोर्वृषणं पार्षदोन्यः प्रतापवान्
Another, powerful, cut off the testicles of Vāyu.
यत्र धर्मे महेशो न प्रथमं परिपूज्यते
Where, in righteousness, Mahesha is not first worshipped—
अनीश्वरं हविर्भुक्तं त्वयेत्या ताडयत्पदा
He struck with his foot, saying, 'The oblation has been consumed by one who is not Lord, by you.'
वामयामास बहुशो भक्षिता ह्यध्वराहुतीः 4.2.89.
He vomited repeatedly, for the sacrificial offerings had indeed been eaten.
रुद्राख्या धारणवशात्प्रमथैस्तेऽवहेलिताः
Because of the power of Rudra's command, the Pramathas disregarded them.
बहिरुद्गिरयामास यद्दत्तं चेशवर्ज्जितम्
He expelled outside whatever had been given, except what was dedicated to the Lord.
उड्डीय गिरिमाश्रित्यच्छन्नः कौतुकमैक्षत
He flew up, took refuge on a mountain, and, concealed, watched the spectacle.
प्रमथाः कालयामासुरन्यानपि च याचकान् वीरभद्रः स्वतः प्राप्तः प्रमथानीकिनी वृतः
The Pramathas drove away the other petitioners as well; Vīrabhadra himself arrived, surrounded by a host of Pramathas.
यज्ञवाटं श्मशानाभं दृष्ट्वा तैः प्रमथैः पुरा
Seeing the sacrificial enclosure made to resemble a cremation ground by those Pramathas before—
गणाः पश्यत दुर्वृत्तैः प्रारब्धानां च कर्मणाम्
O hosts, behold the deeds begun by those of evil conduct.
ये द्विषंति महादेवं सर्वकर्मैकसाक्षिणम्
Those who hate Mahadeva, the sole witness of all actions—
क्व स दक्षो दुराचारः क्व च यज्ञभुजः सुराः
Where is that Daksha, of wicked ways, and where are the gods who partake of the sacrifice?
इत्याज्ञा वीरभद्रस्य प्राप्य ते प्रमथा द्रुतम्
Receiving Virabhadra’s command, the Pramathas swiftly—
तेन ते प्रमथाः सर्वे महाबलपराक्रमाः 4.2.89.
By him, all the Pramathas, mighty and valiant, were—
अथ नष्टेषु सर्वेषु प्रमथेषु हरेर्भयात्
Then, when all the Pramathas had perished, out of fear of Hari—
