शूद्रोपि न भवेत्प्रायो नागयज्ञोपवीतवान्
He is generally not a Śūdra either, for he wears the sacred thread of the Nāgas.
सर्वः प्रकृत्या ज्ञायेत स्थाणुः प्रकृतिवर्जितः
Everyone is to be known by their nature; only the motionless one is devoid of nature.
योषापि न भवेदेष यतोसौ श्मश्रुलाननः
He is not a woman either, for his face bears a mustache and beard.
बालोपि न भवत्येष यतोऽयं बहुवार्षिकः
He is not a child either, for he is many years old.
अतो युवत्वं संभाव्यं नात्र नूनं चिरंतने
Therefore, youthfulness is to be assumed; surely, he is not ancient.
ब्रह्मादीन्संहरेत्प्रांते तथापि च न पातकी
Even if he destroys Brahmā and the others at the end, still he is not a sinner.
अहो धार्ष्ट्यं महद्दृष्टं जटिलस्याद्य चाद्भुतम् 4.2.87.
Ah! What great audacity has been seen today in this matted-haired one, and how astonishing!
एवंभूता भवंत्येव मातापितृविवर्जिताः
Such are those who are deprived of mother and father.
स्वच्छंदचारिणोऽनाथाः सर्वत्र स्वाभिमानिनः
They are independent wanderers, without protectors, and proud everywhere.
जामातॄणां स्वभावोयं प्रायशो गर्वभाजनम्
This is the nature of sons-in-law: generally, they are vessels of pride.
द्विजराजः स गर्विष्ठो रोहिणीप्रेमनिर्भरः
That king of twice-borns is most arrogant, overflowing with love for Rohiṇī.
अस्याहं गर्वसर्वस्वं हरिष्याम्येव शूलिनः
I will surely take away all his pride, that of the trident-bearer.
तथास्याहं करिष्यामि मानहानिं च सर्वतः
Thus I will cause him humiliation in every way.
प्राप्य स्वभवनं देवानाजुहाव सवासवान्
Having reached his own abode, he summoned the gods along with Indra.
भवंतु यज्ञसंभारानानयंतु त्वरान्विताः
Let the sacrificial materials be brought; let them hasten and bring them.
महाक्रतूपद्रष्टारं यज्ञपूरुषमेव च
And the overseer of the great sacrifice, as well as the sacrificial person himself.
प्रावर्तत ततस्तस्य दक्षस्य च महाध्वरः 4.2.87.
Then the great sacrifice of Daksha commenced.
अनीश्वरांस्ततो वेधा व्याजं कृत्वा गृहं ययौ
Thereafter, the Creator, feigning a pretext, departed for his abode, leaving the ritual without its Lord.
दक्षयज्ञे समायातान्सतीश्वरविवर्जितान्
Those who arrived at Daksha’s sacrifice were devoid of the Lord, Sati.
दक्षस्य हि शुभोदर्कमिच्छन्प्रोवाच चेति वै दधीचिरुवाच
Desiring an auspicious outcome for Daksha, Dadhichi spoke thus:
न चास्ति तव सामर्थ्यं क्वापि कस्यापि निश्चितम्
Indeed, you have no capacity anywhere, for anyone, that is certain.
न तादृङ्नेदसि प्रायः क्वापि ज्ञातो महामते
You are generally not known to possess such qualities, O wise one.
कर्तव्यश्चेत्तदाकार्यः स्याच्चेत्संपत्ति रीदृशी
If there is something to be done, it should be accomplished; if such prosperity exists, let it be so.
साक्षाच्च सर्वे मंत्रा वै साक्षाद्यज्ञपुमानसौ साक्षाद्ब्रह्मा स्वयं चैष भृगुर्वै कर्मकांडवित्
All the mantras are present directly, as is the personification of sacrifice; Brahma himself is here, and Bhrigu is expert in ritual.
अयं पूषा भगस्त्वेष इयं देवी सरस्वती
Here is Pūṣā, and Bhaga; this is the goddess Sarasvati.
त्वं च दीक्षां शुभां प्राप्तो देव्या च शतरूपया
You have received the auspicious initiation, along with the goddess of a hundred forms.
स्वयमेव हि कुर्वीत धर्मकार्यं प्रयत्नतः 4.2.87.
One should personally perform the duty of dharma with diligence.
सप्तविंशतिभिः सार्धं पत्नीभिस्तव कार्यकृत्
Your task is accomplished together with your twenty-seven wives.
दीक्षितो राजसूयस्य दत्तत्रैलोक्यदक्षिणः त्रयोदशमिताभिश्च भार्याभिस्तव कार्यकृत्
Initiated for the royal sacrifice, you have given the reward of the three worlds; your task is accomplished with thirteen wives.
हविः कामदुघा सूते कल्पवृक्षः समित्कुशान्
The wish-fulfilling cow produces the oblation, and the wish-granting tree provides the sacred fuel and grass.
