Then, when they had taken their seats, Śaṃbhu, famed for his eloquence,
addressed Hari, marked by the Śrīvatsa, the fire that consumes the race of the Daityas,
Saying: 'O destroyer of Diti's and Danu's wicked sons, do you stand firm on the battlefield?'
'Are the cows on earth free from distress and safe?'
'Are the prescribed sacrifices, with abundant gifts, being performed on earth?'
'Do the foremost twice-born recite the Vedas with all their limbs, without hindrance?'
'Are the classes and stages of life established in their own respective duties?'
Thus Dhūrjaṭi joyfully questioned the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha, and also asked Brahmā, whose Brāhmanic splendor was manifest.
'Is truth and integrity upheld in the assembly of the three worlds?'
'Are Indra and the other gods secure in their own cities?'
The Lord, with due respect, questioned each one in this way about everything.
Then the god dismissed them all and entered his palace.
On the way, Dakṣa, the truthful father, became lost in thought.
His mind was greatly agitated, like the ocean churned by the blow of Mandara.
He became exceedingly proud, having obtained my daughter Satī as a maiden.
'What is his lineage, what is his family, what is his country, what is his nature?'
'He is hardly an ascetic—where is his austerity, where is his weapon-bearing?'
'He is not a celibate; he has already taken a wife.'
He is not a Brāhmaṇa, for he does not know the Veda.
Kṣatra is so called from protecting the wounded; where is that here, O beloved at the time of dissolution?
He is generally not a Śūdra either, for he wears the sacred thread of the Nāgas.
Everyone is to be known by their nature; only the motionless one is devoid of nature.
He is not a woman either, for his face bears a mustache and beard.
He is not a child either, for he is many years old.
Therefore, youthfulness is to be assumed; surely, he is not ancient.
Even if he destroys Brahmā and the others at the end, still he is not a sinner.
Ah! What great audacity has been seen today in this matted-haired one, and how astonishing!
Such are those who are deprived of mother and father.
They are independent wanderers, without protectors, and proud everywhere.
This is the nature of sons-in-law: generally, they are vessels of pride.
