कपिलश्चैव सावर्णिः श्रीकंठः पिगलोंशुमान्
Kapila, Savarni, Shrikantha, Pigala, and Aṃshuman—
एकदा तस्य लिंगस्य कृत्वा पंचापिपूजनम् 4.2.74.
Once, they performed the worship of the linga with five offerings.
अन्यच्च ते प्रवक्ष्यामि तत्र यद्वृत्तमद्भुतम्
I will tell you something else, O sage, a marvelous event that happened there.
एका भेकी मुने तत्र चरंती लिंग सन्निधौ
There was a single frog, O sage, moving about near the linga.
सा तत्र मृत्युं न प्राप शिवनिर्माल्यभक्षणात्
She did not meet death there because she ate the remnants of Shiva’s offerings.
वरं विषमपिप्राश्यं शिवस्वं नैव भक्षयेत्
It is better to drink poison than to consume what belongs to Shiva.
शिवस्य परिपुष्टांगाः स्पर्शनीया न साधुभिः
Those who are adorned with Shiva’s offerings are not to be touched by the virtuous.
कश्चित्काकः समालोक्य मंडूकीं तामितस्ततः
A certain crow, seeing that frog, moved toward her from here and there.
306a वर्षाभ्वी तेन सा क्षिप्ता काकेन क्षेत्रबाह्यतः
By that crow she was seized and thrown outside the sacred field.
प्रदक्षिणीकरणतो लिंगस्यस्पर्शनादपि
Because of circumambulating the linga and even touching it,
शुभावयवसंस्थाना शुभलक्षणलक्षिता
She attained a beautiful form, marked by auspicious signs.
सम्यग्गीतरहस्यज्ञा नितरां मधुरस्वरा 4.2.74.
She became thoroughly skilled in the secrets of song, with a voice exceedingly sweet.
ताना एकोनपंचाश ताला एकोत्तरंशतम्
She mastered forty-nine melodies and one hundred and one rhythms.
306b षड्विंशद्रागरागिण्य इति रागि मुदावहाः
She was devoted to twenty-six modes, and those modes brought joy.
यावंत एव तालाः स्यु रागास्तावंत एव हि
As many rhythms as there are, so too are there the same number of modes.
माधवी मधुरालापा सदोंकारं समर्चयेत्
Madhavi, sweet in speech, always worshipped with the sound of Om.
प्राग्जन्मवासनायोगादोंकारं बह्वमंस्त वै
Due to the influence of impressions from previous births, she greatly revered the syllable Om.
दमनस्थैर्यमगमद्योगेनेव महात्मनः
Through the practice of self-restraint and steadfastness, she attained the state of a great soul.
अतंद्रितमना आसीत्सा तल्लिंग निरीक्षणे
Her mind was unwavering as she gazed upon that emblem.
तावत्कालस्तया साध्व्या महान्विघ्नोऽनुमीयते लिंगानवेक्षणात्तत्र प्रायश्चित्तं कथं भवेत
For as long as that virtuous woman refrained from viewing the emblem, a great obstacle was perceived; how could atonement arise there?
इति संचितयंत्येव सेवां तत्याज नोंकृतेः
Thus, while contemplating this, she did not abandon her service to Om.
नान्य द्दिदृक्षिणी तस्या अक्षिणी श्रुतिगे अपि 4.2.74.
Her eyes desired to see nothing else, nor did her ears wish to hear anything else.
तस्याः शब्दग्रहौ नान्य शब्दग्रहणतत्परौ
Her faculty of hearing was not intent upon grasping any other sound.
नान्यत्र चरणौ तस्याश्चरतः सुखवांछया
Her feet did not wander elsewhere, moving only in pursuit of happiness.
ओंकारं प्रणवं सारं परब्रह्मप्रकाशकम्
Om, the sacred syllable, is the essence, revealing the Supreme Brahman.
सदक्षरं चादिरूपं विश्वरूपं परावरम्
It is the eternal syllable, the primal form, the form of the universe, transcending both the higher and lower.
307a सर्वलोकैकजनकं सर्वलोकैकरक्षकम्
It is the sole creator of all worlds, the sole protector of all worlds.
आद्यंतरहितं नित्यं र्शिवं शंकरमव्ययम्
It is without beginning or end, eternal, auspicious, beneficent, and imperishable.
निरुपाधिं निराकारं निर्विकारं निरंजनम्
It is without attributes, without form, without change, and without blemish.
स्वात्माराममनंतं च सर्वगं सर्वदर्शिनम्
It delights in its own self, is infinite, all-pervading, and all-seeing.
