ततो नभोंगणाद्दूरात्क्षिप्त्वा स जगदंबिकाम् 4.2.72.
Then, from afar, he hurled the World-Mother from the host of celestial beings.
अथांतरिक्षगा देवी तस्य मार्गणमध्यगा
Then the Goddess, moving through the sky, was in the midst of his arrows.
तं विधूय शरत्रातं निजेषु निकरैरलम्
Casting aside that arrow-defender with his own hosts in abundance,
हृदि विद्धस्तया देव्या स च तेन महेषुणा
He was pierced in the heart by that goddess, and by that great arrow.
महारुधिरधाराभिः स्रवंतीं च प्रवर्तयन्
Causing streams of great blood to flow forth and pour out,
देवदुंदुभयो नेदुः प्रहृष्टानि जगंति च
The divine drums resounded, and the worlds rejoiced.
पुष्पवृष्टिं प्रकुर्वंतः प्राप्ता देवा महर्षिभिः
The gods arrived with the great sages, showering flowers.
महेश्वर महाशक्ते दैत्यद्रुमकुठारके
O Great Lord, O Great Power, O axe for the demon-tree,
त्रैलोक्यव्यापिनि शिवे शंखचक्रगदाधरि
O Shiva, pervader of the three worlds, bearer of conch, discus, and mace,
हंसयाने नमस्तुभ्यं सर्वसृष्टिविधायिनि
O you who ride the swan, salutations to you, creator of all beings.
त्वमैंद्री त्वं च कौबेरी वायवी त्वं त्वमंबुपा 4.2.72.
You are Indrani, you are Kuberi, you are Vayavi, you are the lord of waters.
शशांककौमुदी त्वं च सौरी शक्तिस्त्वमेव च
You are the moonlight of the moon, you are the solar power as well.
त्वं गौरी त्वं च सावित्री त्वं गायत्री सरस्वती
You are Gauri, you are Savitri, you are Gayatri, Sarasvati.
चेतः स्वरूपिणी त्वं वै त्वं सर्वेंद्रियरूपिणी
You are the form of consciousness, you are the form of all the senses.
शब्दादि रूपिणी त्वं वै करणानुग्रहा त्वमु
You are the form of sound and so forth, you are the grace of the organs.
त्वं परासि महादेवि त्वं च देवि परापरा
You are supreme, O great goddess; you are both the transcendent and the immanent, O goddess.
सर्वरूपा त्वमीशानि त्वमरूपासि सर्वगे
You are all forms, O ruler; you are formless, all-pervading.
वषड्वौषट्स्वरूपासि त्वमेव प्रणवात्मिका
You are the form of vaṣaṭ and vauṣaṭ, you are indeed the essence of praṇava.
चतुर्वर्गात्मिका त्वं वै चतुर्वर्गफलोदये
You are the essence of the four aims of life, and the giver of their fruits.
यद्दृश्यं यददृश्यं च स्थूलसूक्ष्मस्वरूपतः
Whatever is seen and whatever is unseen, in gross and subtle forms,
मातस्त्वयाद्य विनिहत्य महासुरेंद्रं दुर्गं निसर्गविबुधार्पितदैत्यसैन्यम् 4.2.72.
Mother, today you have slain the great demon lord Durgā, whose army of demons was naturally entrusted to him by the gods.
लोके त एव धनधान्यसमृद्धिभाजस्ते पुत्रपौत्रसुकलत्र सुमित्रवंतः
In this world, those very people are blessed with wealth and grain, with sons, grandsons, good wives, and loyal friends.
त्वद्भक्तिचेतसि जनेन विपत्तिलेशः क्लेशः क्व वानुभवती नतिकृत्सु पुंसु
For those whose minds are devoted to you, O Mother, what trace of misfortune or suffering can ever be experienced, even in the least degree?
चित्रं यदत्र समरे स हि दुर्गदैत्यस्त्वद्दृष्टिपातमधिगम्य सुधानिधानम्
It is remarkable that in this battle, that demon Durgā, having received but a glance from you, attained the nectar of immortality.
प्राच्यां मृडानि परिपाहि सदा नतान्नो याम्यामव प्रतिपदं विपदो भवानि
In the east, O Mṛḍānī, always protect those who bow to you; in the south, O Bhavānī, ward off calamities at every step.
ब्रह्माणि रक्ष सततं नतमौलिदेशं त्वं वैष्णवि प्रतिकुलं परिपालयाधः
O Brahmāṇi, ever guard the crown of those who bow; O Vaiṣṇavī, protect from all that is adverse below.
पातु त्रिशूलममले तव मौलिजान्नो भालस्थलं शशिकला मृदुमाभ्रुवौ च
May your pure trident protect the hair on our heads; may the crescent moon on your brow shield our foreheads, and your gentle eyebrows guard us as well.
श्रोत्रद्वयं श्रुतिरवा दशनावलिं श्रीश्चंडी कपोलयुगलं रसनां च वाणी
May your two ears, O Śrutiravā, protect our hearing; O Śrī Caṇḍī, may your cheeks guard our cheeks, and O Vāṇī, may your tongue shield our speech.
कंठप्रदेशमवतादिह नीलकंठी भूदारशक्तिरनिशं च कृकाटिकायाम्
Here, may Nīlakaṇṭhī protect our throat region, and may the earth-bearing goddess ever shield our shoulders.
हस्तांगुलीः कमलजा विरजा नखांश्च कक्षांतरं तरणिमंडलगा तमोघ्नी 4.2.72.
May Kamalajā protect our fingers, Virajā our pure nails, and may the destroyer of darkness, who dwells in the solar orb, guard our armpits.
