सरश्च सुप्रतीकाख्यं तत्पुरो भासते महत्
And before that shines the great lake named Supratīka.
तत्रास्त्येका महागौरी नाम्ना विजयभैरवी 4.2.66.
There is one great goddess, Mahāgaurī by name, called Vijayabhairavī.
वरणायास्तटे रम्ये गणौ हुंडनमुंडनौ
On the beautiful bank of the Varaṇā, are the two Gaṇas, Huṇḍana and Muṇḍana.
तौ द्रष्टव्यौ प्रयत्नेन क्षेत्रनिर्विघ्न हेतवे
Those two should be seen with care, for the removal of obstacles in the field.
स्कंद उवाच इल्वलारे कथामेकां शृणुष्वावहितो भव
Skanda said: Ilvalāra, listen with attention to a certain story.
एकदाद्रींद्रमालोक्य मेना संहृष्टमानसम्
Once, seeing the lord of the mountains, Menā's heart was filled with joy.
विवाहसमयादूर्ध्वं तस्या गौर्या गिरीश्वर
After the time of the marriage, O lord of the mountains, of that Gaurī,
स वृषेंद्रगतिर्देवो भस्मोरग विभूषणः
That god, adorned with ashes and serpents, went to the lord of bulls.
अष्टौ या मातरो दृष्टा ब्राह्मी प्रभृतयः प्रिय
The eight mothers, beginning with Brāhmī, were seen, O dear one.
तस्यैकस्य न कोप्यन्योस्त्यद्वितीयस्य शूलिनः
Of those, not one belongs to another, except for the second, who is of the trident-bearer.
तस्याः प्रियाया वाक्येन तदपत्यप्रियो गिरिः
By the words of his beloved, the mountain became disinclined toward her offspring.
नितरां बाधते प्रेम तददृष्ट्यग्निदूषितम् ।।4.2.66.
Love greatly distresses him, tainted by the fire of her absence.
यदा प्रभृति सा गौरी निर्गता मम सद्मतः
From the time that Gaurī departed from my house,
तदालापामृतधयौ न मे शब्दग्रहौ प्रिये
Since then, O beloved, my ears do not grasp the nectar of her speech.
जैवातृकी यतोह्नः स्याद्दूरीभूता दृशोर्मम
Since Jaivatrikī is far from my sight during the night,
इत्युक्त्वादाय रत्नानि वासांसि विविधानि च
Saying this, he took the jewels and various garments.
अगस्त्य उवाच कानि कानि च रत्नानि कियंत्यपि च षण्मुख
Agastya said: What are these jewels, and how many are there, O Ṣaṇmukha?
तुला मुक्ताफलानां तु कोटिद्वय परीमिताः
The pearls, measured by weight, are two crores in total.
नवलक्षाधिकं विप्र षडस्राणां सुतेजसाम्
O sage, there are more than nine lakhs of six-sided, highly radiant gems.
कोटयः पद्मरागाणां पंचावैहि तुला मुने
There are crores of padmarāga gems, weighed in five scales, O sage.
तथा गोमेद रत्नानां तुलालक्षमिता मुनै
Likewise, the gomeda jewels are measured by the scale, O sage.
गरुडोद्गाररत्नानां तुलाः प्रयुतसंमिताः 4.2.66.
The garuḍodgāra jewels are weighed in tens of millions of scales.
अष्टांगाभरणानां च संख्या कर्तुं न शक्यते
The number of eightfold ornaments cannot be counted.
चामराणि च भूयांसि द्रव्याण्यामोदवंति च
There are many yak-tail fans and fragrant substances as well.
सर्वाण्यपि समादाय प्रतस्थे भूधरेश्वरः
Taking all these, the lord of the mountains set forth.
अनेकरत्ननिचयैः खचिताऽखिलभूमिकाम्
The entire earth was adorned with heaps of various jewels.
सौधाग्रविविधस्वर्णकलशोज्वलदिङ्मुखाम्
The directions shone with golden pots of various kinds atop the mansions.
महासिद्ध्यष्टकस्यापि क्रीडाभवनमद्भुतम्
Even the wondrous play-palace of the eight great siddhis was there.
इति काशीसमृद्धिं स विलोक्याभूद्विलज्जितः
