ज्येष्ठतीर्थे नरः काश्यां दत्त्वा दानानि शक्तितः
A man who gives gifts according to his ability at the Jyeṣṭha holy site in Kāśī,
ज्येष्ठेश्वरो र्च्यः प्रथमं काश्यां श्रेयोर्थिभिर्नरैः 4.2.63.
Jyeṣṭheśvara should first be worshipped in Kāśī by those seeking excellence.
अथ नंदिनमाहूय धूर्जटिः स कृपानिधिः
Then, calling Nandin, Dhūrjaṭi, the ocean of compassion,
तदंतरेस्ति मे भक्तो जैगीषव्यस्तपोधनः
He said: 'Among them is my devotee, Jaigīṣavya, rich in austerity.'
महानियमवान्नंदिस्त्वगस्थिस्नायु शेषितः
Nandin, strict in great discipline, remained with only skin, bones, and sinews.
यदाप्रभृत्यगां काश्या मंदरं सर्वसुंदरम्
From that time onward, Kāśī became Mandara, the most beautiful of all.
गृहाण लीलाकमलमिदं पीयूषपोषणम्
Receive this playful lotus, nourished by nectar.
ततो नंदी समादाय तल्लीलाकमलं विभोः
Then Nandi took up that playful lotus of the Lord.
नंदी दृष्ट्वाथ तं तत्र धारणादृढमानसम्
There, seeing him, Nandi, whose mind was steadfast through concentration—
तपांते वृष्टिसंयोगाच्छालूर इव कोटरे
At the end of his austerities, like a lotus in a hollow after the rain—
अथ नंदी समादाय सत्वरं मुनिपुंगवम्
Then Nandi, taking it, swiftly approached the foremost of sages.
जैगीषव्योथ संभ्रांतः पुरतो वीक्ष्य शंकरम् 4.2.63.
Jaigīṣavya, agitated, saw Śaṅkara before him.
प्रणम्य दंडवद्भूमौ परिलुठ्य समंततः
He bowed down, prostrating on the ground, rolling about in all directions.
जगदानंदकंदाय परमानंदहेतवे
To the one who brings delight to the world, the cause of supreme bliss—
अरूपाय सरूपाय नानारूपधराय च
To the formless, to the one with form, to the one who assumes many forms—
स्थावराय नमस्तुभ्यं जंगमाय नमोस्तुते
Homage to you who are immovable, homage to you who are moving.
नमस्त्रैलोक्यकाम्याय कामांगदहनाय च
Homage to the desired of the three worlds, to the one who burns the body of desire.
श्रीकंठाय नमस्तुभ्यं विषकंठाय ते नमः
Homage to you, Śrīkaṇṭha; homage to you, Viṣakaṇṭha.
नमः शक्त्यर्धदेहाय विदेहाय सुदेहिने
Homage to the one whose body is half the power of Śakti, to the bodiless, to the one with a beautiful body.
कालाय कालकालाय कालकूट विषादिने
To Time, to the destroyer of Time, to the one who drank the poison Kālakūṭa—
नमस्ते खंडपरशो नमः खंडें दुधारिणे
Homage to you who wield the broken axe, homage to you who hold the broken staff.
गीर्वाणगीतनाथाय गंगाकल्लोलमालिने ।। 4.2.63.
To the Lord of the songs of the gods, adorned with the waves of Gaṅgā—
चंद्रार्धशुद्धभूषाय चंद्रसूर्याग्निचक्षुषे
To the one adorned with the pure crescent moon, whose eyes are the moon, sun, and fire—
जगदीशाय जीर्णाय जराजन्महराय ते
To the Lord of the universe, to the ancient one, to you who remove old age and birth—
नमो डमरुहस्ताय धनुर्हस्ताय ते नमः
Salutations to You who hold the ḍamaru drum, salutations to You who hold the bow.
त्रिशूलव्यग्रहस्ताय नमस्त्रिपथगाधर
Salutations to You whose hand is engaged with the trident, salutations to You who bear the sacred river.
त्रयीमयाय तुष्टाय भक्ततुष्टिप्रदाय च
To You who are the embodiment of the three Vedas, who are pleased, and who grant satisfaction to devotees.
दारिताशेषपापाय नमस्ते दीर्घदर्शिने
To You who have destroyed all sins, salutations to You, the far-seeing one.
दोषाकर कलाधार त्यक्तदोषागमाय च
O source of faults, bearer of the digit of the moon, who has abandoned the approach of faults.
नमो धीराय धर्माय धर्मपालाय ते नमः
Salutations to You, steadfast one, embodiment of righteousness, protector of righteousness.
