एषां क्रियानिषेकादि श्मशानांता च वैदिकी
For them, the Vedic rites begin with conception and end with cremation.
स्पंदनात्प्राक्पुंसवनं सीमंतोन्नयनं ततः
Before the movement, the rite of puṃsavana is performed, then sīmantonnayana follows.
नामाह्न्येकादशे गेहाच्चतुर्थेमासि निष्क्रमः
On the eleventh day after birth, naming is done at home; on the fourth month, the child is taken out.
शममेनो व्रजेदेवं बैजं गर्भजमवे च

For the purpose of increasing Brahminical brilliance, a Brahmin is eligible in the fifth year.
महाव्याहृतिपूर्वं च वेदमध्यापयेद्गुरुः
The teacher should instruct the student in the Veda, preceded by the great Vyāhṛtis.
पूर्वोक्तविधिना शौचं कुर्यादाचमनं तथा 4.1.36.
He should perform purification and also ācamana as previously described.
स्नात्वांबुदैवतैर्मंत्रैः प्राणानायम्य यत्नतः
Having bathed, controlling the breath carefully with mantras dedicated to water deities,
अग्निकार्यं ततः कृत्वा ब्राह्मणानभिवादयेत्
After performing the fire ritual, he should respectfully greet the Brahmins.
अभिवादनशीलस्य वृद्धसेवारतस्य च
One who is accustomed to respectful greeting and devoted to serving elders,
अधीते गुरुणा हूतः प्राप्तं तस्मै निवेदयेत्
What is learned, summoned by the teacher, should be reported to him.
अध्याप्याधर्मतोनार्थात्साध्वाप्तज्ञानवित्तदाः
One should not teach for unrighteousness or for gain, but only for those who are virtuous, knowledgeable, and generous.
धारयेन्मेखलादंडोपवीताजिनमेव च
He should wear the sacred belt, staff, sacred thread, and deer skin.
ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियविशामादिमध्यावसानतः
For Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas, the beginning, middle, and end are prescribed.
वाग्यतो गुर्वनुज्ञातो भुंजीतान्नमकुत्सयन्
Having restrained speech and with the teacher’s permission, he should eat food without disparagement.
अनारोग्यमनायुष्यमस्वर्ग्यंचातिभोजनम्
Excessive eating causes illness, shortens life, and prevents heaven.
न द्विर्भुंजीत चैकस्मिन्दिवा क्वापि द्विजोत्तमः 4.1.36.
A distinguished twice-born should not eat twice in one day at any place.
मधुमांसं प्राणिहिंसां भास्करालोकनांजने
Honey, meat, violence against living beings, and applying collyrium while looking at the sun,
औपनायनिकः कालो ब्रह्मक्षत्र विशां परः
The time for the upanayana rite is highest for Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas.
इतोप्यूर्ध्वं न संस्कार्याः पतिता धर्मवर्जिताः
Beyond this, those fallen and devoid of righteousness should not be consecrated.
सावित्रीपतितैः सार्धं संबंधं न समाचरेत्
One should not associate with the Savitri mantra together with those who have fallen.
वसीरन्नानुपूर्व्येण शाण क्षौमाविकानि च भवेत्त्रिवृत्समाश्लक्ष्णा विशस्तु शणतांतवी
Let garments of hemp, linen, and wool be worn in proper order; the sacred thread should be made smooth, threefold, and especially woven from hemp.
मुंजाभावे विधातव्या कुशाश्मंतकबल्वजैः
In the absence of hemp, it should be made from munja grass, kusa grass, asmantaka, or balvaja fibers.
उपवीतक्रमेण स्यात्कार्पासं शाणमाविकम्
According to the rule for the sacred thread, it may be made of cotton, hemp, or wool.
बिल्वपालाशयोर्दंडो ब्राह्मणस्य नृपस्य तु
The staff for a Brahmin should be from bilva or palāśa wood, and for a king, likewise.
आमौलिं वाऽऽललाटंवाऽऽनासमूर्ध्वप्रमाणतः
It should reach up to the top of the head or the forehead, or up to the tip of the nose, in length.
प्रदक्षिणं परीत्याग्निमुपस्थाय दिवाकरम् 4.1.36.
Having circumambulated the fire to the right, he should stand facing the sun.
मातृमातृष्वसृस्वसृपितृस्वसृपुरःसराः
Let the mother, maternal aunt, sister, and paternal aunt go before him.
यावद्वेदमधीते च चरन्वेदव्रतानि च
