रजसा तमसा विवर्धितं क्व नु पापं परितापदायकम्
Where then is the sin, intensified by passion and ignorance, that causes distress?
यदि जातुचिदंधकद्विषस्तवनामौष्ठपुटाद्विनिःसृतम्
If ever, from the lips of your enemy, your name is uttered—
परमात्मन्परंधाम स्वेच्छा विधृत विग्रह
Supreme Self, highest abode, you have assumed form by your own will—
अद्य धन्योस्मि देवेश यं न पश्यति योगिनः 4.1.31.
Today I am blessed, O Lord of the gods, whom even yogis do not see.
अवियोगोऽस्तु मे देव त्वदंघ्रियुगलेन वै 4.1.31.
May I never be separated, O Lord, from your pair of feet.
ब्रह्महत्यादि पापानि यस्या नाम्नोपि कीर्तनात् 4.1.31.
Even the sins of killing a Brahmin and others are destroyed by merely chanting your name.
महाश्मशानमासाद्य यदि देवाद्विपद्यते 4.1.31.
If, upon reaching the great cremation ground, one falls from the gods—
तीर्थे कालोदके स्नात्वा कृत्वा तर्पणमत्वरः 4.1.31.
Having bathed in the sacred waters at the holy place and performed the offering without delay—
स्कंद उवाच पुनर्विशेषं वक्ष्यामि सदाचारस्य कुंभज
Skanda said: I will again speak in detail about the conduct of the virtuous, O son of Kumbha.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्यास्त्रयो वर्णा द्विजाः स्मृताः
Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas—these three castes are considered twice-born.
एषां क्रियानिषेकादि श्मशानांता च वैदिकी
For them, the Vedic rites begin with conception and end with cremation.
स्पंदनात्प्राक्पुंसवनं सीमंतोन्नयनं ततः
Before the movement, the rite of puṃsavana is performed, then sīmantonnayana follows.
नामाह्न्येकादशे गेहाच्चतुर्थेमासि निष्क्रमः
On the eleventh day after birth, naming is done at home; on the fourth month, the child is taken out.
शममेनो व्रजेदेवं बैजं गर्भजमवे च
One should proceed with the rites for peace, as well as those for the child born of the womb.
सप्तमेथाष्टमेवाब्दे सावित्रीं ब्राह्मणोर्हति
In the seventh or eighth year, a Brahmin is eligible for the Savitri initiation.
ब्रह्मतेजोभिवृद्ध्यर्थं विप्रोब्देपंचमेर्हति
For the purpose of increasing Brahminical brilliance, a Brahmin is eligible in the fifth year.
महाव्याहृतिपूर्वं च वेदमध्यापयेद्गुरुः
The teacher should instruct the student in the Veda, preceded by the great Vyāhṛtis.
पूर्वोक्तविधिना शौचं कुर्यादाचमनं तथा 4.1.36.
He should perform purification and also ācamana as previously described.
स्नात्वांबुदैवतैर्मंत्रैः प्राणानायम्य यत्नतः
Having bathed, controlling the breath carefully with mantras dedicated to water deities,
अग्निकार्यं ततः कृत्वा ब्राह्मणानभिवादयेत्
After performing the fire ritual, he should respectfully greet the Brahmins.
अभिवादनशीलस्य वृद्धसेवारतस्य च
One who is accustomed to respectful greeting and devoted to serving elders,
अधीते गुरुणा हूतः प्राप्तं तस्मै निवेदयेत्
What is learned, summoned by the teacher, should be reported to him.
अध्याप्याधर्मतोनार्थात्साध्वाप्तज्ञानवित्तदाः
One should not teach for unrighteousness or for gain, but only for those who are virtuous, knowledgeable, and generous.
धारयेन्मेखलादंडोपवीताजिनमेव च
He should wear the sacred belt, staff, sacred thread, and deer skin.
ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियविशामादिमध्यावसानतः
For Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas, the beginning, middle, and end are prescribed.
वाग्यतो गुर्वनुज्ञातो भुंजीतान्नमकुत्सयन्
Having restrained speech and with the teacher’s permission, he should eat food without disparagement.
अनारोग्यमनायुष्यमस्वर्ग्यंचातिभोजनम्
Excessive eating causes illness, shortens life, and prevents heaven.
न द्विर्भुंजीत चैकस्मिन्दिवा क्वापि द्विजोत्तमः 4.1.36.
A distinguished twice-born should not eat twice in one day at any place.
मधुमांसं प्राणिहिंसां भास्करालोकनांजने
Honey, meat, violence against living beings, and applying collyrium while looking at the sun,
औपनायनिकः कालो ब्रह्मक्षत्र विशां परः
The time for the upanayana rite is highest for Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas.
