यायजूके कुले जन्म क्वक्व मे व्यसनं तथा
Birth in a family of sacrificers—where is that, and where is my misfortune?
भिक्षितुं नाधिगच्छामि न मे परिचितः क्वचित्
I am unable to beg; I have no acquaintance anywhere.
सदाभ्युदिते भानौ प्रसूर्मे मृष्टभोजनम्
Whenever the sun rose, my mother gave me well-cooked food.
इति चिंतयतस्तस्य भानुरस्ताचलं गतः
While he was thinking thus, the sun set behind the mountain.
महोपहारानादाय नगराद्बहिरभ्यगात्
Taking great offerings, he went out from the city.
पक्वान्नगंधमाघ्राय क्षुधितः स तमन्वगात् 4.1.13.
Smelling the aroma of cooked food, hungry, he followed him.
पलायमानो निहतः क्षणात्पंचत्वमागतः
Fleeing, he was struck down and in a moment met his death.
कुलाचारप्रतीपोयं पित्रोर्वाक्यपराङ्मुखः 4.1.13.
He opposes family customs and turns his back on his parents' words.
कलिंगराजोभविताऽधुनाविधुतकल्मषः 4.1.13.
The king of Kaliṅga will now become free from all impurity.
स्वार्थदीपदशोद्योत लिंगमौलि तमोहरः 4.1.13.
The crest-jewel of the liṅga, shining with the light of self-interest, dispels darkness.
तावत्तताप स तपस्त्वगस्थिपरिशेषितम् 4.1.13.
He performed such austerity that only skin and bones remained.
क्रूरदृग्वीक्षते यावत्पुनःपुनरिदं वदन् 4.1.13.
With a fierce gaze he looks again and again, saying this.
देवेन दत्ता ये तुभ्यं वराः संतु तथैव ते 4.1.13.
The boons given to you by the god shall remain just as they are.
पुर्यां यक्षेश्वराणां ते स्वरूपमिति वर्णितम्
In the city, this is described as the true form of the lords of the Yakṣas.
रम्यं मधुवनं प्राप यमुनायास्तटे महत
He reached the delightful Madhuvana on the great bank of the Yamunā.
आद्यं भगवतः स्थानं तत्पुण्यं हरिमेधसः
That is the original, sacred abode of the blessed Lord Hari, the wise one.
जपन्स वासुदेवाख्यं परंब्रह्म निरामयम्
He recited the name of Vāsudeva, the supreme, flawless Brahman.
हरिर्हरित्सु सर्वासु हरिर्हरिमरीचिषु
Hari is among the gods, in all beings, and in the rays of Hari.
जले शालूरकूर्मादि रूपेण भगवान्हरिः
In water, the blessed Hari takes the forms of the śālūra fish, the tortoise, and others.
अनंतरूपः पाताले गगनेऽनंतसंज्ञकः
He is of endless forms in the netherworld, and in the sky he is called Ananta.
देवेषु यो वसेन्नित्यं देवानां वसतिर्हि यः
He who always dwells among the gods is indeed the dwelling of the gods.
विष्लृव्याप्तावयंधातुर्यत्रसार्थकतां गतः
He is the support of all, pervading and filling everything, where meaning is fulfilled.
सर्वेषां च हृषीकाणामीशनात्परमेश्वरः
He is the supreme Lord, the ruler of all the senses.
न च्यवंतेपि यद्भक्ता महति प्रलये सति 4.1.20.
Even at the great dissolution, his devotees do not fall.
इदं चराचरं विश्वं यो बभार स्वलीलया
He who, by his own play, bore this entire moving and unmoving universe.
तस्येक्षणे समीक्षेते नान्यद्विप्णुपदादृते
At his glance, all is seen; nothing exists apart from the lotus-footed one.
नान्य शब्दग्रहौ तस्य जातौ शब्दग्रहावपि
No other perception of sound exists for him, nor are even perceptions of sound born in him.
गोविंदचरणार्थार्चां तत्प्रियंकर्मवै विना
Without worship of the feet of Govinda, or actions dear to Him,
निर्द्वंद्वचरणद्वंद्वं तन्मनो मनुते हरेः
The mind contemplates the dual feet of Hari, moving beyond all dualities.
चरणौ विष्णुशरणौ हित्वा नारायणांगणम्
Abandoning the shelter of Vishnu’s feet, one forsakes the courtyard of Nārāyaṇa.
