न तत्याज च तद्धर्मं दुर्बोधो व्यसनी यतः
He did not abandon that duty, though afflicted and difficult to understand.
सपारदारैर्व्यसनैरेभिः कोत्र न खंडितः
Who here has not been harmed by these misfortunes involving others' wives?
अर्पयेद्द्यूतकाराणां सकुप्यं वसनादिकम्
He would offer the gamblers garments and other items, including vessels.
स्वपंत्यास्त्वेकदाऽऽदाय दुरोदरिकरेऽर्पयत्
Once, taking the bedding, he gave it to the doorkeeper.
दीक्षितेन परिज्ञाता दैवाद्द्यूतकृतः करे पृष्टस्तेनाथ निर्बंधादसकृत्प्रत्युवाच किम्
The initiated one, having recognized by fate the gambler's deed in his hand, repeatedly asked with insistence, 'What is this?'
ममाक्षिपसि विप्रोच्चैः किं मया चौर्य कर्मणा 4.1.13.
Why do you loudly accuse me, O Brahmin? Have I committed an act of theft?
मम मातुर्हि पूर्वे द्युर्जित्वानीतो हि शाटकः
The shawl brought by my mother was won in gambling in former times.
अन्येषां द्यूतकर्तृणां भूरि तेनार्पितं वसु
A great amount of wealth was given by him to other gamblers.
भाजनानि विचित्राणि कांस्य ताम्रमयानि च
Various vessels, made of bronze and copper, too.
न तेन सदृशः कश्चिदाक्षिको भूमिमंडले
No dice-player on earth was equal to him.
कथं नाज्ञायि तनयो ऽविनयानयकोविदः
How was the son, skilled in improper conduct, not recognized?
प्रावृत्य वाससा मौलिं प्राविशन्निजमंदिरम्
Covering his head with a garment, he entered his own house.
दीक्षितायिनि कुत्रासि क्व ते गुणनिधिः सुतः
O wife of the initiated one, where are you? Where is your son, the repository of virtues?
अंगोद्वर्तन काले या त्वया मेंऽगुलितो हृता
At the time of massaging the limbs, the ring you took from me was stolen.
इति श्रुत्वाथ तद्वाक्यं भीता सा दीक्षितायिनी
Hearing those words, the wife of the initiated one became afraid.
व्यग्रास्मि देवपूजार्थमुपहारादि कर्मणि 4.1.13.
I am busy with the tasks of offering and worship for the gods.
इदानीमेव पक्वान्नकरणव्यग्रया मया
Just now, I am occupied with the preparation of cooked food.
दीक्षित उवाच हंहो सत्पुत्रजननि नित्यं सत्यप्रभाषिणि
The initiated one said: 'O mother of a noble son, always truthful in speech.'
तदातदेति त्वं ब्रूया नाथेदानीं स निर्गतः
You say 'then' and 'not then'; now he has gone out.
कुतस्त्वच्छाटकः पत्नि मांजिष्ठो यो मयाऽर्पितः
O wife, from where is your shawl, the red one which I gave?
सांप्रतं नेक्ष्यते सोपि भृंगारुर्मणिमंडितः
Now, even that bee adorned with jewels is not seen.
क्व दाक्षिणात्यं तत्कांस्यं गौडी ताम्रघटी क्व सा
Where is that southern bronze, where is the Gauda copper pot, where is she?
क्व सा पर्वतदेशीया चंद्रकांतशिलोद्भवा
Where is she, the mountain-dweller, born of moonstone?
किं बहूक्तेन कुलजे तुभ्यं कुप्याम्यहं वृथा
Why say more? O noble lady, I am angry with you in vain.
अनपत्योस्मि तेनाहं दुष्टेन कुलदूषिणा
I am childless because of that wicked destroyer of the family.
अपुत्रत्वं वरं नृणां कुपुत्रात्कुलपांसनात् 4.1.13.
For men, being without a son is better than having a wicked son who brings disgrace to the family.
स्नात्वा नित्यविधिं कृत्वा तस्मिन्नेवाह्निकस्यचित्
Having bathed and performed the daily rites, on that very day,
श्रुत्वा तथा स वृत्तांतं प्राक्तनं स्वं विनिंद्य च
Hearing thus that account, and reproaching his own past,
चिंतामवाप महतीं क्व यामि करवाणि किम्
He fell into deep thought: 'Where shall I go, what shall I do?'
देशांतरे ह्यस्ति धनः सद्विद्यः सुखमेधते
In another land, there is wealth, true knowledge, and happiness is obtained.
