परितो लक्ष्यते तीर्थं पूर्वस्यां दिशि शोभने
All around, the sacred site is visible in the beautiful eastern direction.
उत्तरस्यां दिशि पुरा पुण्या स्कंदनदी स्थिता
In the northern direction, formerly, the holy Skanda river was situated.
पश्चिमस्यां दिशि ख्याता परा कुंभनदी शुभा
In the western direction, the renowned and auspicious Kumbha river is found.
गंगा च मूलभागस्था यमुना गगने स्थिता
The Ganga remained at the root, while the Yamuna was established in the sky.
बहून्यपि च तीर्थानि संभूतानि समंततः
And many other sacred places also came into being all around.
तपोभिर्बहुभिस्सोयं शोणाद्रीशमतोषयत्
By means of many austerities, he pleased the Lord of Shonadri.
प्रख्याताश्च प्रकाशंते दुर्बोधास्त्वल्पचेतसाम् ।। 1.3.1.6.
The renowned ones are manifest, but are difficult to comprehend for those of little understanding.
कथमेकत्र सांनिध्यं लभेरन्भुवि मानवाः
How could humans on earth obtain the presence of all these in one place?
अंतर्निगूढतेजास्त्वं गत्वा यस्सकलैः सुरैः
You, whose inner radiance is concealed, went there with all the gods.
अहं च शंभुमभ्यर्च्य तपसारुणपर्वतम्
And I, having worshipped Shambhu through austerity, at the Aruna mountain—
विश्वकर्मकृतं दिव्यं विमानं विविधोत्सवम्
—obtained a divine palace, made by Vishvakarma, filled with various celebrations.
धर्मशास्त्राणि विविधान्यवापुर्मुनिपुंगवाः
The eminent sages acquired various treatises on dharma.
मया च शंभुमभ्यर्च्य कृताग्न्याहुतिसंभवाः
And I, having worshipped Shambhu, obtained those arising from offerings into the sacred fire.
हतशत्रुगणैभूपैर्लब्धराज्यैः पुरा नृपैः
In former times, kings whose enemies had been vanquished and who had gained their kingdoms—
इदमनुभववैभवं विचित्रं दुरितहरं शिवलिंगमद्रिरूपम्
—experienced this wondrous and prosperous manifestation, the Shiva-linga in the form of a mountain, which destroys sin.
अवनतजनरक्षणोचितस्य स्मरणनिराकृतविश्वकल्मषस्य
It is fitting for the protection of those who bow down, and by remembrance, it removes all the world's impurities.
प्राणिनामपि सर्वेषामुपशांतिं कथं गतः
How did peace come to all living beings?
तीर्थानामुद्भवः पुण्यात्कथं चारुणपर्वतात्
How did the sacred places arise from the auspicious Aruna mountain?
द्वापरं हाटकगिरिः कलौ मरकताचलः
In Dvapara, it was the golden mountain; in Kali, the emerald mountain.
बहुयोजनपर्यंतं कृते वह्निमये स्थिते
In the Krita age, it extended for many yojanas and was made of fire.
शनैः शांतोरुणाद्रीशः श्रीमानभ्यर्थितः सुरैः
Gradually, the illustrious Lord of Aruna, being requested by the gods, became peaceful.
अथ गौरी मुनिं प्राह कथं शांतोऽरुणाचलः
Then Gaurī spoke to the sage: How did Arunachala become peaceful?
इति तस्या वचः श्रुत्वा गौतमस्त्वभ्यभाषत
Hearing her words, Gautama replied to her.
पुरा सुराः स्तुतिं चक्रुरभ्यर्च्य क्रतुसंभवैः
Long ago, the gods offered praise, worshipping with sacrifices.
भगवन्नरुणाद्रीश सर्वलोकहितावह
O Lord of Arunachala, benefactor of all worlds,
