धान्यत्यागे च तद्धान्यमथवा शालयः स्मृताः

शुष्केंधनानां भारांश्च दद्याच्छीतापनुत्तये
One should give bundles of dry firewood to drive away the cold.
मंजिष्ठा रक्तवासांसि तथा तूलवतीं पटीम्
Madder-dyed red garments and also a cotton-filled cloth.
कंबलानि विचित्राणि निर्वातानि गृहाणि च
Variegated blankets, windproof houses as well.
घृतकंबलपूजाभिर्महास्नानपुरःसरम् 4.1.4.
With worship using ghee and blankets, preceded by a great bath.
इदं पातिव्रतं तेजो ब्रह्मतेजो भवान्परम् 4.1.4.

साधयिष्यामि वः कार्यं विसर्ज्येति दिवौकसः 4.1.4.

वेदव्यास उवाच इमं पतिव्रताध्यायं श्रुत्वा स्त्रीपुरुषोपिवा
Vedavyāsa said: Having heard this chapter on chastity, whether woman or man—
अगस्तिरुवाच तस्य पुत्रो महातेजाः शिवशर्मेति विश्रुतः
Agastya said: His son, renowned as Shivaśarman, was of great brilliance.
अधीत्यवेदान्विधिवदर्थं विज्ञाय तत्त्वतः।. पठित्वा धर्मशास्त्राणि पुराणान्यधिगम्य च
Having properly studied the Vedas and truly understood their meaning, having recited the Dharmaśāstras and mastered the Purāṇas,
अंगान्यभ्यस्य तर्कांश्च परिलोड्य समंततः
Having practiced the limbs (of the Vedas) and logic, and having thoroughly examined them all around,
आयुर्वेदं विचार्यापि नाट्यवेदे कृतश्रमः
Having also considered Ayurveda, he exerted himself in the Nāṭyaveda.
कलासु च कृताभ्यासो मन्त्रशास्त्रविचक्षणः
He practiced the arts and was skilled in the science of mantras.
अर्थानुपार्ज्य धर्मेण भुक्त्वा भोगान्यदृच्छया
Having acquired wealth righteously, he enjoyed pleasures as they came.
यौवनं गत्वरं ज्ञात्वा जरां दृष्ट्वाश्रितां श्रुतिम्
Having recognized the fleeting nature of youth and witnessed the onset of old age, I have relied upon the scriptures.
पठतो मे गतः कालस्तथोपार्जयतो धनम्
While I was reading, time passed away; likewise, while I was acquiring wealth.
न मया तोषितो विष्णुः सर्वपापहरो हरिः
I have not pleased Viṣṇu, the remover of all sins, Hari.
तमस्तोमहरः सूर्यो नार्चि तो वै मया क्वचित् 4.1.7.
I have never worshipped the Sun, who dispels masses of darkness, anywhere.
न प्रीणिता मया देवा यज्ञैः सर्वैः समृद्धिदाः
I have not satisfied the gods with all the prosperous sacrifices.
न मया तर्पिता विप्रा मृष्टान्नैर्मधुरै रसैः
I have not gratified the Brahmins with well-cooked food and sweet flavors.
बहुपुष्पफलोपेताः सुच्छायाः स्निग्धपल्लवाः
I have not offered trees adorned with many flowers and fruits, with fine shade and tender leaves.
दुकूलैः स्वानुकूलैश्च चोलैः प्रत्यंगभूषणैः
I have not given garments, suitable and fine, nor ornaments for every limb.
द्विजाय नोर्वरा दत्ता यमलोकनिवारिणी
I have not given a cow to a twice-born, which averts the realm of Yama.
नालंकृता सवत्सा गौः पात्राय प्रतिपादिता
I have not presented a decorated cow with calf to a worthy recipient.
