Here there is no anger, nor envy, nor greed, nor desire, nor lack of self-control, nor fear.
Those brāhmaṇas who delight in Brahman, who are devoted to austerity, who are rich in penance,
Women devoted to fidelity to their husbands, and others who practice celibacy,
Those devoted to their mother and father, and those who died in the protection of cows,
In holy places, in austerity, in acts of charity, and in righteous conduct,
Those intent on reciting the Gāyatrī, those devoted to the Agnihotra sacrifice,
Those who are free from desire and drink Soma, and those who drink the water washed from the feet of twice-born men,
Those who are capable of accepting gifts, and those who are free from accepting gifts,
In Prayāga, during the month of Māgha, by whom the morning bath is taken with pure hearts,
In Vārāṇasī, at the confluence of five rivers, those who bathe for three days in the month of Kārtika,
Having bathed at Maṇikarṇikā, those who please brāhmaṇas with gifts,
Then, having reached Kāśī, they are not afflicted by that merit,
Whatever action, even the least, is performed by men at Avimukta,
Indeed, in the field of Vaiśveśvara, even by dying, both results are obtained,
By whom pure wealth is given to brāhmaṇas at Kurukṣetra,
By whom the ancestors are approached at Gayā, the grandfathers,
Not by bathing, nor by giving gifts, nor by recitation, nor by worship—
Those who establish houses furnished with all implements, including mortars and the like—
Who build halls for sacred study and cause the Veda to be taught—
And those who give Purāṇas or even donate books—
For the sake of sacrifice, for marriage, for vows, or to a Brāhmaṇa—
Who builds a hospital, intent on supporting physicians—
And those who restore holy places that have been ruined or obstructed—
Brāhmaṇas alone are most dear to Viṣṇu’s left side and to Śiva’s left side.
Brāhmaṇas and cows are one family, divided into two forms.
Brāhmaṇas are the moving holy places, established for all the worlds.
Cows are supremely pure, unmatched; cows are the highest auspiciousness.
At the tip of their horns are all sacred waters; at the tip of their hooves, all mountains.
Seeing a cow being given, the great-grandfathers dance with joy.
Sins cry out and poverty departs, along with diseases.
