नमो हिरण्यरूपाय ब्रह्मणे ब्रह्मरूपिणे 4.1.2.
Salutations to the one of golden form, to Brahman, who assumes the form of Brahman.
यन्न देवा विजानंति मनो यत्रापि कुंठितम्
That which even the gods do not comprehend, where even the mind becomes restrained—
योगिनो यं हृदाकाशे प्रणिधानेन निश्चलाः
Which the yogis, unwavering, perceive in the space of the heart through concentration—
कालात्पराय कालाय स्वेच्छयापुरुषाय च
To the one beyond time, to time itself, to the person who acts by his own will—
विष्णवे सत्त्वरूपाय रजोरूपाय वेधसे
To Viṣṇu, who is of the nature of sattva, to the creator who is of the nature of rajas—
नमो बुद्धिस्वरूपाय त्रिधाहंकृतये नमः
Salutations to the one whose form is intelligence, to the threefold originator of ego—salutations.
नमो ब्रह्मांडरूपाय तदंतर्वर्तिने नमः
Salutations to the one who is the form of the cosmic egg, and who dwells within it.
अनित्यनित्यरूपाय सदसत्पतये नमः
Salutations to the lord of the real and unreal, who is both transient and eternal in form.
तव निःश्वसितं वेदास्तव स्वे दोखिलं जगत्
The Vedas are your exhalation; this entire universe is yours indeed.
नाभ्या आसीदंतरिक्षं लोमानि च वनस्पतिः 4.1.2.
From your navel arose the midspace; from your hair, the plants and trees.
त्वमेव सर्वं त्वयि देव सर्वं स्तोता स्तुतिः स्तव्य इह त्वमेव
You alone are all; in you, O god, is all. The one who praises, the praise, and the praised—here, you alone are all.
इति स्तुत्वा विधिं देवा निपेतुर्दंडवत्क्षितौ
Having thus praised the Creator, the gods fell to the ground like staffs.
उत्तिष्ठत प्रसन्नोस्मि वृणुध्वं वरमुत्तमम्
Rise up! I am pleased. Choose the highest boon.
यः स्तोष्यत्यनया स्तुत्या श्रद्धावान्प्रत्यहं शुचिः
Whoever, with faith and purity, will praise with this hymn daily—
दास्यामः सकलान्कामान्पुत्रान्पौत्रान्पशून्वसु
We shall grant all desires: sons, grandsons, cattle, and wealth.
ऐहिकामुष्मिकान्भोगानपवर्गं तथाऽक्षयम्
Enjoyments of this world and the next, liberation, and also the imperishable.
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन पठितव्यः स्तवोत्तमः
Therefore, this supreme hymn should be recited with all effort.
पुनः प्रोवाच तान्वेधाः प्रणिपत्योत्थितान्सुरान्
Then the Creator, having bowed, again spoke to the gods who had risen.
एते वेदा मूर्तिधरा इमा विद्यास्तथाखिलाः
These Vedas, bearing form, and likewise all these branches of knowledge,
ब्रह्मचर्यमिदं चैषा करुणा भारतीत्वियम् 4.1.2.
This is brahmacarya, and this is compassion; this is the speech of the goddess Sarasvatī.
नेह क्रोधो न मात्सर्यं लोभः कामोऽधृतिर्भयम्
Here there is no anger, nor envy, nor greed, nor desire, nor lack of self-control, nor fear.
ये ब्राह्मणा ब्रह्मरतास्तपोनिष्ठास्तपोधनाः
Those brāhmaṇas who delight in Brahman, who are devoted to austerity, who are rich in penance,
पातिव्रत्यरता नार्यो ये चान्ये ब्रह्मचारिणः
Women devoted to fidelity to their husbands, and others who practice celibacy,
मातापित्रोरमी भक्ता अमी गोग्रहणे हताः
Those devoted to their mother and father, and those who died in the protection of cows,
तीर्थे तपस्युपकृतौ सदाचारादिकर्मणि
In holy places, in austerity, in acts of charity, and in righteous conduct,
गायत्री जाप्यनिरता अग्निहोत्र परायणाः
Those intent on reciting the Gāyatrī, those devoted to the Agnihotra sacrifice,
निस्पृहाः सोमपा ये वै द्विजपादोदपाश्च ये
Those who are free from desire and drink Soma, and those who drink the water washed from the feet of twice-born men,
प्रतिग्रहे समर्था हि ये प्रतिग्रहवर्जिताः
Those who are capable of accepting gifts, and those who are free from accepting gifts,
प्रयागे माघ मासो यैरुषः स्नातोऽमलात्मभिः
In Prayāga, during the month of Māgha, by whom the morning bath is taken with pure hearts,
वाराणस्यां पांचनदे त्र्यहं स्नातास्तु कार्तिके 4.1.2.
