अनेन विधिना ये वै कुर्वंति कार्तिकव्रतम्
Whoever performs the Kārtika vow according to this method,
व्यास उवाच उदियायोदयगिरौ शुचिप्रसृमरैः करैः
Vyāsa said: The sun rose on the mountain of sunrise, with rays pure and radiant.
संवर्धयन्सतां धर्मान्त्यक्कुर्वंस्तामसीं स्थितिम्
Nourishing the virtues of the good, he dispelled the state of darkness.
हव्यं कव्यं भूतबलिं देवादीनां प्रवर्तयन्
He set in motion offerings for gods and ancestors, as well as oblations for beings.
असतां हृदि वक्त्रेषु निर्दिशंस्तमसः स्थितिम्
Indicating the presence of darkness in the hearts and mouths of the wicked.
यस्मिन्नभ्युदिते जातः सम्यक्पुण्यजनोदयः
When he rises, there is a true emergence of virtuous people.
सायमस्तमितः प्रातः कथं जीवेद्रविः पुनः
When he sets in the evening and rises again in the morning, how could the sun live anew?
यामं भुक्त्वा तथाग्नेयीं ज्वलंतीं विरहादिव
Having consumed the fiery portion, blazing as if separated,
तांबूलीरागरक्तौष्ठीं द्राक्षास्तबकसुस्तनीम्
With lips reddened by betel and saffron, adorned with clusters of grapes,
मलयानिल निःश्वासां क्षीरोदकवरांबराम्
Breathing the breeze from Malaya, clad in garments of milk and water,
कावेरीगौतमीजंघां चोलचोलां शुकावृताम् 4.1.2.
With legs of Kāverī and Gautamī, wrapped in the cloth of Cola, adorned with parrots.
सुकोमलमहाराष्ट्रीवाग्विलासमनोहराम्
Delightful with the charming speech of Mahārāṣṭra, soft and graceful.
सुदक्षदक्षिणामाशामाशानाथः प्रतस्थिवान्
The lord of the southern direction, Sudakṣa, set forth toward the southern quarter.
न शेकुरग्रतो गंतुं ततोऽनूरुर्व्यजिज्ञपत्
They were unable to proceed ahead, so Anūru reported this.
अनूरुरुवाच भानो मानोन्नतो विन्ध्यो निद्ध्यय गगनं स्थितः
Anūru said: 'O Sun, the proud Vindhya stands, having blocked the sky.'
अन्रूरुवाक्यमाकर्ण्य सविता हृद्यचिन्तयत्
Hearing Anūru’s words, the Sun pondered in his heart.
व्यास उवाच सूरः शूरोपि किं कुर्यात्प्रांतरे वर्त्मनिस्थितः
Vyāsa said: 'What can even the Sun do, if he is halted on his path?'
गृह्यत्राप्रत्यूष्टेः क्षणं नावतिष्ठति
He does not remain even for a moment after the time of dawn has passed.
योजनानां सहस्रे द्वे द्वे शते द्वे च योजने
Two thousand, two hundred and two yojanas is the distance.
गते बहुतिथेकाले प्राच्यौदीच्यां भृशार्दिताः
As much time passed, those in the eastern and northern regions were greatly afflicted.
पाश्चात्या दक्षिणात्याश्च निद्रामुद्रितलोचनाः 4.1.2.
Those in the western and southern regions had their eyes closed in sleep.
अहोनाहस्कराभावान्निशानैवाऽनिशाकरात्
Because of the absence of the sun by day, and the absence of the moon by night,
ब्रह्मांडं किमकांडे वै लयमेष्यति तत्कथम्
How then would the universe, without its sections, come to dissolution?
स्वाहास्वधावषट्कारवर्जिते जगतीतले
On earth, deprived of the offerings svāhā, svadhā, and vaṣaṭ,
सूर्योदयात्प्रवर्तंते यज्ञाद्याः सकलाः क्रियाः
All rites, beginning with sacrifice, commence at sunrise.
चित्रगुप्तादयः सर्वे कालं जानंति सूर्यतः
All, including Citragupta and others, know time by the Sun.
तत्सूर्यस्य गतिस्तंभात्स्तंभितं भुवनत्रयम्
Because the Sun’s movement was obstructed, the three worlds were held in suspension.
एकतस्तिमिरान्नैशादेकतस्तु दिवातपात्
On one side, there was night due to darkness; on the other, there was the heat of day.
इति व्याकुलिते लोके सुरासुरनरोरगे
Thus, as the world became distressed—gods, demons, humans, and serpents alike—
ततः सर्वे समालोक्य ब्रह्माणं शरणं ययुः
Then, seeing this, all went to Brahmā for refuge.
